Gibson LPJ 2013 VS Epiphone Ultra Pro VS Fender Strat

My price range is £200-£600

Ive narrowed my choices down to three:

  • Epiphone Ultra Pro 2013
  • Gibson LPJ
  • Fender Strat Standard Modern Player

I would prefer a les paul style guitar but im torn up whether to go with the Gibson LPJ or a Epiphone.

What are the differences between a LPJ and a gibson standard? Is the quality THAT different in sound?

Main question: Is the LPJ smaller than a standard gibson les paul?

I plan on playing soft, rock, country, blues etc

would love some feedback.

What is it about the Ultra Pro that attracts you to it? If it's the general features, you might want to consider a Tribute Plus, those are some great guitars with some extras over the Ultra Pro even.

Personally, I'd take an Ultra Pro or Tribute Plus over the LPJ, they look better and sound just as good as the LPJ I tried once. My opinion only of course.

Re: Gibson LPJ 2013 VS Epiphone Ultra Pro VS Fender Strat

So does the Tribute plus have any significant advantages over the ultra pro?
I really want a nice looking Red Wine or Sunburt coloured Les Paul that sounds good and doesnt have many bad reviews, which ever is best for the price

I dont really want the LPJ anymore

The Tribute Plus has Gibson '57 pickups, a long tenon, strap locks, upgraded electronics and switch and comes with a hard case, for a price of $599. It's pretty much an unbeatable bargain. Of all the people on MLP who've bought one, I do not remember so much as one single bad review to date.

My only beef is the matched flame top that isn't even...it's off to the left on the cherry one. Get one off Sweetwater and that won't be a problem so you can pick and choose a winner. T+ is the best value and guitar IMO out of the 3 for sure.

As the others said, the T+ is a seriously good guitar for the price. Best value for a new guitar out of the ones I've bought. Straplocks and the tenon weren't selling points of interest to me, but the rest was.

The only thing that might throw some people off is that the T+ has slightly thinner neck than most other Les Pauls. So if you hate thin necks the T+ might not be for you (and a Prophecy is definitely out of the question).

Both the pics I posted were from Sweetwater.

But they're stock pics because they have none in stock.

Re: Gibson LPJ 2013 VS Epiphone Ultra Pro VS Fender Strat

I was going to say Strat or T+ until I saw it was the Modern Player.

I'll add some other similar guitars to the mix:
MIM Standard = Prophecy Plus = Tribute Plus > Ultra 2/3 > LPJ > Ultra Pro > Modern Player

My MIM Standard with Vintage Noiseless pups can hold its own against a stock Tribute+ and cost ~$10 cheaper including mods.

I personally don't like the Ultras due to the excessive weight relief. My brother's Ultra2 is 7.2lbs. The only thing that saves the Ultras is the Nanomag in the 2/3 and the quilt top on the Ultra 2; the Ultra Pro is not as good as the 2 and 3. It's weird holding a Les Paul the same weight as my SG.

Modern Players are just glorified Squiers. They are NOT made in Mexico. Enough said. I don't want anyone to be cheap and miss out on the 2012 MIM line; Mine is AMAZING.

LPJ's are the cheapest carved top Les Paul you can get with Gibson on the headstock. Eh... Not my cup of tea. I would take a used Gibby Studio over a new LPJ ANYDAY. Even if the LPJ was $500, the T+ or a used Studio are better value. You can get a good Studio used $600-$900 depending on year/condition/case.

Prophecy Plus' are equal with Tribute Plus'. The only real difference are the features. IE: 24 fret , Quilt top , EMGs/490r+498t

(Disclaimer: I don't own a Les Paul of any brand and love double cutaways. I own a G400 with 490r/498t, a MIM Strat with Vintage Noiseless pickups, and if I were to get any of these guitars I mentioned, it would have to be the Prophecy EX or the Tribute Plus. All my opinion; your decision.)

The LPJ isn't smaller. From what I've seen they look like decent guitars but they are very stripped down. The finish is like a kind of stain. It doesn't appear to rub off though.
The body is mahogany(multiple pieces) with maple cap. The neck is maple and the fingerboard is rosewood(not sure how many pieces though).

This guitar sounds really good...but so does a Tribute plus. The T+ is a much prettier guitar though and comes with a case.

Re: Gibson LPJ 2013 VS Epiphone Ultra Pro VS Fender Strat

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions

I went with the Tribute + Black Cherry, every review is pretty much 4.5/5, like someone said ^^ theres hardly any bad reviews.

there was only ONE left on pretty much every site in the UK so i guess it was destiny!

I cannot wait to play this, ive been playing my crappy squier for so long ive forgotten what it feels like to play a les paul. Slash was the main reason i got into guitar playing (his solos are so bluesy and real)
£449

I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!! ITS SO SEXY!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with that at all. I'd look at an off center seam in the veneer as a defect, same thing with an off center strap button. There's no excuse for either of those things on anything other than a factory 2nd with a discounted price.

Also, don't forget the trib plus has a better, more durable, more modern finish.

The LPJ has a "rubbed" nitro finish. (i.e, nitro that is not even buffed to a sheen) It'll wear through very quickly.

Gibson insists on using inferior, outdated finishes on their guitars. (Note, this is my opinion - I dislike nitro finishes and went for the Epi trib plus over a Gibson LP based partly on this)

I've seen the off center strap button thing on Gibsons as well. I was looking at some Signature "T" s and I saw some with this issue. Another funny thing is they call the maple cap a "figured" maple top.. There was such a variance between guitars...one would look highly flamed and another would look more like a plain top.

At least with the T+ you are pretty much guaranteed a beautiful top even if it is a veneer...but who cares. I love my Epi's as much as my new Gibby. No guitar is perfect but you can get close

The wine red T+ looks killer...I saw one in person recently....great color choice.
