Question Ideas for a backup ?

Hi there!

I´d like to get an Epi to be used as a backup for my #1 Gibson Standard, as well as alternative tunings since I got no money to buy another Gibson as I would like. Any ideas of models I should consider? Sorry if this sounds stupid but I know almost nothing about the Epis.

Thanking in advance,

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

Epiphone studios are dirt cheap, and the same quality as the Epi Standards/Customs. Set neck, carved top, and $300 US new.

Here's mine - a Goth Studio model. Its a great guitar and fun to play - sounds excellent - and I do have "the real thing" to compare it too. Well worth the $$.

Thanks for your replies (more are welcome)! I´m much more for the look of standards since it looks like my Gibson .
Do the elitists worth the $ ?

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

Dice ---Elitists are your specialty no??

Dice is right check this out
Buy Epiphone Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar | Solid Body Electric Guitars | Musician's Friend

or you can shell out like $200 more bucks and get this

Buy Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar | Solid Body Electric Guitars | Musician's Friend

Im sure they both will do you just fine for a back up.

FYI I dont endorse Muscian's Friend I was just giving an example

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

Epiphone Elitists are def worth the dough. You will find it very comparable to your Gibson STD.

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

Hell any of the Standard Plus tops would be a good backup to your Gibson, I used them for backups for several years before I just switched over to Epis and Orvilles.

They are road worthy, I took them to Japan and all over the west coast and central US several times, I still travel several thousand miles a month carrying them on the road with me.

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

The Elitists are WELL worth the money if you can find one. I'll warn you that you might put your Gibson Standard on the back burner if you get one, though. The Elitists are real professional grade Les Pauls - more than just something to use "in a pinch." I've been using my Elitist Standard as a backup to my R8 at gigs, but I think that I am just going to just USE my Elitists at gigs and leave the R8 at home from now on. No point in having some drunk steal my R8 when the Elitist sounds and plays (hell, and looks) every bit as good at 1/3 the price (cheaper to replace if stolen).

I personally would spend $8-900 on a used Elitist before I'd spend $600 on a new Epi Standard - every time - but thats just me.

Lefty - no SG's here. I've played an Epi Goth V - also a nice guitar.

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

i have a nice epi standard it can hold up very well next to my gibson but, its got more of a deeper tone to it.

i have not tryd the studio epiphones but if there anything like gibson's studios compered to there standards then thay should be a good deal

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

I'll be the bird on the other coast and vouch for Tokai LS-series. Nothing against Epiphones at all, I love mine, but LS is just the best bang for your buck when it comes to standard factory-built Les Pauls. Looks like a Gibson, feels like a Gibson, plays like a Gibson and is constructed like a Gibson, the only difference being it's made in Japan and isn't finished with nitro lacquer - the importance of which we can debate upon.

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

Hey guys, thank you so much for your words!
Well, I guess I will go for a standard since elitists are very hard to find specially here and as told, my STD would be in risk of becomin' the backup one ! I don't think she would like that.... I will let you know ASAP I get mine.

In time, my main "issue" with Epiphones is the headstock look. I'd love if it looks like Gibsons... I don't know about you and of course,it's just an aesthetic mather.

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

zoso you are so damn right
just what my problem is with the epis´
its all bout the aestheteics
but i mean the elistist headstock look even less gibson-y than the epi standards headstocks

just what came to my mind: would you be open for a les paul junior?
those ar eawesoem for open tunings/slide since the p90s offer a perfectly diverse sound from standard hbs....

Then I guess ya don't need a fancy top then But really the head stock will grow on you I prefer it to the Gibson open book myself, more lines to it more for your eyes to freast on IMO when and if ya look at it. And besides ya need something to set it apart from the Gibson you wouldn't want an Epi to out class the Gibson

Re: Ideas for a backup ?

I highly recommend just a regular Epi LP Standard. Either plain top or PLUS top. You can save a little money that way and still have a sweet guitar.

I take both my Gibson LPs and my Epi LPs to gigs. I'll use the Gibson one set and the Epi the next and I enjoy both equally.

I'm truly amazed at how great of quality the Epis are... stock pickups an' all!!

Of course..... I am playing through a Marshall DSL 100 / 1960AV halfstack. That helps too!!
