Guitar recording free software..any suggestions ?
Hi. I have tried rcording via windows sound recorder and its just too simple and doesnt have many options such as over drive and changing the tone and etc..I was wondering if you guys/girls know a better recording software thats free and gives those extra features.
If you know one then please give me the link or the name of the software. many thanks. Also is it possible to use the PC speakers as an amplifier while playing ? |

Audacity is free, I like it for recording my acoustic... I haven't tried it with any guitar other than my acoustic and SG with EMGs.
You can't use the pc speakers as an amp tho... just get you a split cable so you can run one to an amp and the other to the pc.

I play through my computer. You do need an external power source, like a distortion pedal or effects pedal of some kind. I run my guitar through a digitech metal master, then run that through the computer. I got a little adapter I bought at the source that has a 1/4" input to 1/8" output, plugs into the microphone jack on my pc.
I use Adobe Audition to record but whenever I record for a few minutes it skips for some reason so I might switch back to Acid Pro which I was using before. Both programs are "free" if you know what to do.

If you want a decent quality signal, it's worth it to get a DI box of some kind. Behringer and M-Audio make some decent ones for $100 or less. You can plug your guitar directly to the box, then it hooks up to a USB port. The quality of the audio it records is well beyond just plugging into a standard soundcard. Line-6 makes some products specifically for recording guitar as well, with all the built in amp simulation stuff.
But for software, I'd also recommend Audacity. |

Software wise, try looking for Reaper.
IMO thats one of the most powerful, useful recording software for any guitarist to have. And of course if you're just tracking at home, its useful to get one of these as well to get rid of that latency you will have by plugging in through your computer inputs.

Umm I'm pretty sure Line 6 makes good recording-into-computer things, check out the TonePort GX, the reviews are good and only 50 bucks(seems we've gotten away from the "free" thing), and then just use it with the "Free" software of Audacity, and your all set! I use Audacity (there's a learning curve involved, but, meh....the price is right), running through my cheapie Digitech RP-90 ..... works well enough for my amusement....do not expect to hear/see me online

Re: Guitar recording free software..any suggestions ?
I use kristal audio engine, it works really well for me. Really easy to use once you get it up and running. It does take some tweaking to get your guitar to sound right in the recording but when you get that figured out its all good. Its really no big deal, if you were paying for it that would be a different story, but since its free...eh, whatever.

![]() After you installed Toneport, it basically becomes one of your sound cards, you then can change your default playing/recording device to Toneport in your control panel. Last you plug your computer speakers to the Toneport output to monitor your playing. I just bought a logitech 2.1 sound system to replace my shitty pc speakers, and it sounds pretty awesome. For best sound and lowest latency you can setup Reaper to use ASIO driver. Let me know if you decided to go this route and have further questions. Took me while to figure the basics out. It's pretty good fun to record yourself playing. I have recorded several recording myself(can be found in my signature, be warned they are not that great)
