Re: Overhauled vintage ‘burst plaintop
I didn't use a kit...I just got the parts list & schematic from WeberVST.com and bought all of the parts from various online vendors. I couldn't find any kit makers who had all of the exact parts I wanted, so I just tracked them down one by one. Some good suppliers are Weber, Mojotone, and Vibroworld.
If you're looking for a good kit for a Tweed, try Marsh Amps: Marsh Amplification My next amp build is gonna be an Allen Accomplice head. Such a sweet amp! As for the cab, my pops and I built it from scratch. |

Re: Overhauled vintage ‘burst plaintop
Just installed a Gibson Historic jackplate courtesy of MLP bro sapi from way over in Malta. Of course like just about all Gibson parts, it took some modding to fit my Epi, but I'm real happy with the results. Now the only stock parts are the wood, backplates, & strap buttons. Thanks sapi!

Re: Overhauled vintage ‘burst plaintop
Sir you have created a beauty and I tip off my hat to you. I am seriously in love with the work you have done on this guitar.
You sure took advantage of a great looking guitar there. I can only imagen what she sounds like. Please if possible post some sound clips. You as well as me are on the same boat. My Playing skill is not up to par to justify the purchase of an R8 (which is my dream guitar.). So for now i picked up a Cherry burst Epi plaintop. She has the similar UC serial as your and she sounded an played amazing, even with one of her strings missing. She is on layaway as we speak and im planing on having her home by mid month. You have inspired me to do the same with this guitar. So ill be referencing back to this thread and shooting you some PM's with other questions. |

As for the results, I think acoustically the guitar rings noticably better, and the tailpiece is like 1/3 the weight of stock. Asthetically, the nickel looks much better than the stock chrome (and it ages prettier, too). These are big favorites with other forum members. |

Re: Overhauled vintage ‘burst plaintop
The TRC is a Gibson I got from Ray's Custom Shop on ebay. It's not a Historic, but the dimensions are the same as one. I made a wooden plug that fits tightly into the truss rod adjustment hole, and then that gives something for the bottom-center screw of the TRC to bite into. I originally made a plug out of hard rubber, but the tight-fitting wood is much nicer. I'll try and take some photos sometime soon. Have fun with your mods!

Re: Overhauled vintage ‘burst plaintop
The GFS Vintage 59s cannot be beat for the price. Serious bang for the buck. If you have a little more cash (and who does these days?), sure, go for some 57 Classics or RS Fralins, but I highly recommend these GFS PUs if you're strapped. I was surprised how bright and clear they are...not muddy like typical low-end humbuckers. My RS wiring kit contributes to the clarity I'm sure. If you haven't rewired your Epi & installed some PIO caps, I suggest you do that before getting new pickups.

Re: Overhauled vintage ‘burst plaintop
Thanks Christmas. That was pretty much the answer I was looking for. I've been playing a stock Epi for a while now and have only started modding mine. I have the wiring kit in the mail already, then it's on to the pickups.
Thanks again Great looking guitar by the way! |

Re: Overhauled vintage ‘burst plaintop
I can't really tell from the pictures, Christmas, so i thought it'd be best to ask
Allparts has awful descriptions and pictures for their products. For the pickup rings, did you get their cream ones or the white plastic ones? I've been researching lots of R9s and the pickup rings look white in some pictures, and a more white/cream in others. Not to mention attempting to match that to the pickguard color trying to match this les paul... The Music Zoo Collection Which item number from allparts did you end up getting for the rings and pickguard? ..again, sorry about all the questions. i'll post an epic thread when finished to offset my nagging. |
