Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

Hey guys. I'm looking at getting a new electric guitar to replace my terrible strat copy. I'm really tight on money, and have come to two options:

Epiphone Les Paul Standard or Epiphone G-400

If I decide on the G-400, I can buy it in a couple of weeks. But if I decide the Les Paul, it'd take me over a month, as there is a $250 price difference here in Aus.

So what are the differences in sound? Does the G-400 sound as good as the Les Paul?

I need help on deciding which one to get.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

They are two different monsters, but at this price point they sound pretty similar.

Sinmastah has both a G400 and an LP with humbuckers. My SG had EMGs so I can't help you a whole lot on tonal qualities.

I guess I'm just an SG kinda guy, cuz I actually prefered my SG better.

If you can, just find somewhere and play both, it'll be the only way you will really know.

Thanks. I thought the SG looked really good to me. But they have had a lot of mixed reviews. I think, you either pick up a really good one, or a not so good one. So I'm gonna go to a guitar shop and try some SG's and LP's soon. Whichever I get, I'll get the other one next year anyway.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

they are both nice but im an lp guy first so thats what i would get!
imo the sg will be a little more like your strat in feel.....and itll sound a little more snappy in the mids and highs. the lp will accentuate the mids and lows. if you can play them both before getting one, it would be much easier on ya!

Yeah thanks. I just wanted to make sure there werent any major differences in quality or anything. I'll try them out, and see which one I prefer.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

Ive got both and theyre both very different beasts.

Firstly youve got to get on with the SG shape, Ive seen loads of players gas on about getting one for months and then sell it in a couple of months because it doesnt sit right or the necks too heavy or it doesnt feel right. Play it, play it standing up, play it sitting down make sure you know it well.

If it was my only guitar and Id played LP's in the past Id be very disapointed and wish Id saved for the LP. Price differences are the same in the UK as aus but trust me waiting for the LP (and a custom if you can get one) will be well worth your wait...

I would get the Paul........I have an '04 G-400 MIC, and although it's a rockin' corvette of a guitar.......I prefer to ride in a cadillac........good things are worth waiting for.......I'd get the Paul.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

I have both.. LP Std. and SG400..

the natural sound of the LP [without amp] is richier than the SG400.. that's a plus..

the SG is more confortable for octaves and solos near 20th frets.. that's a plus..

I would get the LP first.. then the SG for backup!

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

I like the SG better to be honest. It's a lot lighter, so it's just easier to play. Also upper access is awesome. Also it's a lot easier to re-wire which is a must for Epiphones. Not to mention is just looks bad ass because the neck sticks out farther from the body. Not to mention it is a lot cheaper. The only complaint I have bout SG's is that the finishes are boring, luckily I got my hands on a really nice faded cherry.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

Hmm... Alright, I know the differences of how they feel and look etc. But what are the main sound differences? Are the humbuckers the same? I really want to make a good decision that I wont regret. If I get the Les Paul, I will have to get it on its own. If I get the SG I can get it with a hardcase, and be able to get a new amp earlier.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

The pickups are the exact same. I beleive. If anything the SG would be a little hotter however.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul or G-400

I think I'll go the SG, if I try it and like it. I need a new guitar badly, cuz my other is too bad to play on. And I think comparing the SG to my guitar, there's not much more I could want. Anyway, I'll get the Les Paul next year.
