Gfs pups

I put a set of gfs boutique fat pats in my les paul MIK and it kind of sounds like a duck now like old 70's funk bass.
I backed them off to see if it would fade but it didn't I am using .047 caps modern wiring.
Any ideas?
Or are they just what they are? Ducks
Thanks
John

Re: Gfs pups

I have a set in my wifes Laguna and they sound great to me. Might be in your wiring or cap choice.

Re: Gfs pups

I'd suggest changing the caps to .022 PIO (paper-in-oil). With that change, you'll be getting a better tonal range from your pickups. Heck, you can even try a .015 in the neck position. I'd also change the pots to CTS for better signal flow and reliable service. Also, consider changing the wiring scheme to 50's style for much more usable tone control throughout the entire knob travel. Those pups should sound really good! IMO

Historically, they are bargains- I've used the crunchy PAF's and Mean 90's.

Re: Gfs pups

I'm thinking it's something to do with the wiring schematic and caps also. I have a set of GFS professional series Alnico II's in one of my Gits and they sound exceptionally good. Way better than I expected given the price.

Maybe the coils are wired out of phase?

It "sounds like a duck"??? "Like old 70's funk bass"?? What does that even mean? You're going to have to be more descriptive if you want help figuring out why your pickups don't sound right.

But yeah, I have GFS pickups and they sound pretty great to me.

Re: Gfs pups

Double check to be sure you didn't connect the wrong 2 leads together from the pickups. My guess is that instead of wiring the two "end" leads for the coils together you wired an "end" to a "start" (or maybe it's the other way around...not THAT familiar with the terms in pickup design) and ended up with the two coils cancelling each other out. Check the sheet that should have come with the pickups to be sure.

Re: Gfs pups

Problem was a poor ground to the tone pot.
Now they sound good but still think they are a bit dark.
I am going to swap out the caps for 022 or 015.
Thanks for all the help
And go listen to an old funk album with a nice bass grove it has a quacking type of sound, that was the sound!
I guess it would have been alright if it was 1972 I could have joined the group Parliament!
