Exclamation Epiphone Les Paul Pot/Cap Upgrade Help.

Alright, well I am new here but I have been stalking the forums here and many threads related to upgrading an Epiphone Les Paul. Especially the Standard Plus Top because that is the one that I currently own. Well Anyway I am trying to find good Pot and Cap choices. Now I understand that some people are gonna comment "go search the forums!". But I guess I didnt find my answer there and thats why I am posting it here.

Well anyway I saw a video on YouTube of a guy upgrading his Standard Plus Top. He mentioned "Super Pots" and how they are better then the regular CTS pots and the standard Pots. I am not sure what Caps are the best option so if anyone can post any nice working suggestions in the comments I would appreciate it.

I also had a few additional questions, After buying a switchcraft selector switch do I need to buy any additional things like wiring or such? Also If I am planning to change the wiring in my guitar is there a link to some good suggestions or kits? Since I am posting this thread I might aswell Post the video I am getting most of my ideas from and where I heard "Super Pots". I will also post a list of other upgrades that I have already decided to apply to my guitar.

video:

Other Upgrades:
Black Pickguard with white striped outline.
Black rhythm/Treble Plate.
Black Selector Switch Cap.
Black Speed Knobs.
White Tusq Nut
Ernie Ball Cobalt Strings .11 - .48
Black Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines/3 Per Side
SwitchCraft Output black (Black)
SwitchCraft Jack
Humbucker Pickup Rings (Black)
Black Backplates
Dunlop Dual Design Straplok System

And that is Pretty much all for now. Thanks for reading.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Pot/Cap Upgrade Help.

Welcome to MLP. Super pots are custom taper pots. You can get pots just as good from a professional harness builder. I'd recommend this one:

https://www.martinsixstringcustoms.c...ses/cat_2.html

He's a member here and can be found in the vendors section. As for your switch, you can get the wire you need from this company:

Guitar Parts Resource ::The Guitar Player's Hardware Store

It's a pretty user friendly site. Remember that the ground and hot lugs on a Switchcraft toggle are just the opposite of an import switch. Good luck with your project.

I really like the regular Bourns pots AES sells, about $2.50 each with a smooth and even taper. They're low friction though so some guys might not like that.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Pot/Cap Upgrade Help.

I've recently upgraded my 2001 MIK Epi with CTS 500K, Switchcraft switch and jack, 22AWG and Mallory Mustard 0.022 caps.
You may need to enlarge the drillings, the Switchcraft switch takes a 1/2" drilling and the pots 3/8", yours may be 8mm. I wrapped some glasspaper around a 3/8" bit for the switch and took it out to the size of the drilling in the poker chip.

Dependant on the top thickness, you might need to get the extender nut option which is for tops up to around 7mm thick. You can see it here.

I used short shaft pots, and they were only just long enough with the star washer on the inside and dress washer on the top. I'd definitely use long shaft if I did another one. I ordered 500K pots, with Linear for the volumes and Log for the tones. As Iím a sad git, I measured the resistances to see how they came out. They measured 450K, 461K, 525K and 527K, all (just) within the stated 10% tolerance. I used the 450K and 461K, in real terms 2% adrift from each other on the neck, with the 525K and 527K, 0.3% apart, on the bridge.
All in all it was well worth the effort, especially as I wired it 50s style

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Pot/Cap Upgrade Help.

Ok well I am sortof a noob at all of this. But What is the difference between these two different options, and is one better then the other? https://www.martinsixstringcustoms.c.../prod_125.html

and this: https://www.martinsixstringcustoms.c...ss/prod_9.html

Also I am wondering what does coil splitting and tapping mean and how it affects the sound or playing style of your guitar. Thanks for the help I am sorry for being such a noob. Also Thanks for the help on my first questions I really appreciate it.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Pot/Cap Upgrade Help.

I also have another question prior to my reply here.. Anyway, the pre wired harness that you sent me a link to:

https://www.martinsixstringcustoms.c...ss/prod_9.html

It has an option on the bottom for the neck capacitor to either be .015 or .022 which one is a better option or whats the difference? BTW thats with the Bridge Capacitor having to be .022.. Another question I had is what is the aging option? What does it do or mean? Also I heard somebody say that I should go with the long because the short just hardly fits.. so it is safer and better to go with the long is that correct info?

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Pot/Cap Upgrade Help.

Are you upgrading with your stock P/U's? If so, you won't be able to use the coil split harness because your P/U's will only have 2-conductor leads on them. You need P/U's with 4-conductor leads for coil split.

The dual coil split harness is the same as the standard Les Paul harness - The difference being that both tone potentiometers are push/pulls so you can split the humbuckers (i.e. make them single-coil like). As someone already mentioned, you'll need 4 conductor pickups to get this result. If your going to stick with the stock pickups, this is not the harness you want. You'll need a result Les Paul harness.

Cap values are a matter of preference. Some guys like .015 in the neck for the Clapton "Woman Tone" sound. That value, as opposed to .022, will not roll of highs as quickly.

Aging is cosmetic only. Simply put a way of making the harness look like it was pulled out of an old guitar. No tonal affect whatsoever.

Feel free to email with any other questions you have.

I have a .015 in the neck and a .022 in the bridge in the Goldtop that is modern wiring. In the Faded Cherryburst which is '50s wiring the .015 is in the bridge and the .022 is in the neck. I didn't wire either of these guitars and they both sound great.

I might just go with the .022 in bridge and .015 in neck.

That is usually what I do. I was surprised to find the .015 in the bridge position in the Cherryburst.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Pot/Cap Upgrade Help.

while your at it change out your bridge and stoptail, cost about 60 bucks with shipping, huge upgrade compared to the far east crap, don't forget if you go with the new harness you need new dials, all far east is metric, the cts pots are imperial, im waiting on my new pickups then it's epiphone crazy time!!! building MY guitar, it's my keeper, and the bonus is, if the wood quits on me i can gut it
