A funny thing happened on the way to Guitar Center...
![]() ![]() I like the blues, and recently some friends at work and I decided to start a "blues club" where we'll be trading around CDs, branching out, learning more, etc. The first CD for our club was B.B. King's "Completely Well." My wife and kids are on a trip so I, for once, have all the time in the world and thought I might go to Guitar Center to play around, with no time limit for once. On the way there (it's a small commute) I was listening to Mr. King and thought, "I should have humbuckers." I have a Strat, and that's usually the sound I'm going for, but some humbuckers might be nice for that more "jazzy" blues sound. Plus I play with a group of equally bad players from time to time, and between the three of us, we have a plethora of Strats and one Tele and no humbuckers. So I thought maybe I could find a cheap Les Paul, because that's what my brain goes to when I think "humbuckers," and I've always assumed I would one day own one each of the Big 3 (Strat, LP and Tele). But when I got to Guitar Center, I walked in and right up front was a red Epiphone Dot that looked practically like the red Gibson B.B. King is playing on the cover of the CD I'm listening to. This spoke to the poser blues player living inside me, so I played around with it. It was cool, I liked it. Red isn't a favorite color of mine, though, and the knobs were a bit wonky, but I liked the idea of it, anyway. But I put it down and played some Les Pauls, as that was the original plan, and they were cool, but the poser in me kept going back to the "blues player" looking guitar. As I walked around, something whispered in my ear and I looked up to see another Dot hanging on a wall, only this one was prettier, and it said "Deluxe" on the tag, and...it was cheaper!? I asked the guy at the counter what "Deluxe" meant and, of course, he didn't know. I asked him why it was cheaper, and he said because all the stuff on the wall is being pushed right now, and they always do random sales like that. I took it off the wall and played it. It felt good, the neck felt better than the red one I tried earlier, but maybe that was in my head. I figured the "Deluxe" was probably cosmetic, having something to do with the fake wood flame, but regardless, if I was paying LESS for it, seemed like a no brainer. So I decided it was okay to like it and I bought it. The guy behind the counter polished it up for me (which made it look even cooler) and then handed it to me, saying "Here's your baby." Thus King Baby was born and the blues poser in me is pretty happy about it. That seemed like a lot of story for an Epiphone Dot, apologies. Here's another picture to keep you interested: ![]() I dig it, can't wait to play it some more. Why am I here posting? I've never had an Epiphone/Gibson type guitar before, it's pretty fun. I have no idea how to tweak it and set it up, but that's what the Internet is for, I guess. BTW, it just occurred me as I type this epic post that there was no paper work included (I didn't even think to ask) so I have no idea what year it is. The receipt has a serial number of 11091502599, but according to the Internet there should be a letter at the beginning and that seems like too many numbers. Is it on the guitar somewhere?

Re: NGD: Epiphone Dot Deluxe Flametop (Vintage Sunburst)
Very nice guitar!
For the SN, check the back of the headstock or inside the F hole. There may be a sticker in there, and it might have the SN on it?

Yep, there was! Good call. It's the same number that was on the receipt, so i guess it is a legit number. If I'm reading it right, I think it means it's a September 2011 model manufactured in China.

Re: NGD: 2011 Epiphone Dot Deluxe Flametop (Vintage Sunburst)
That is a beautiful guitar! It reminds me of the ES335 that the lead guitar player in one of my Dads old bands used all the time. That brought back some good memories from my childhood seeing that.

Re: NGD: 2011 Epiphone Dot Deluxe Flametop (Vintage Sunburst)
Very nice Dot!! I've been GASing for a semi-hollow for a while, as I think they're suitable for Blues/Jazz/Church style.
A Dot did catch my eye just yesterday when I was shopping for some guitar accessories in my local guitar shop. However, I was aiming for something smaller to start with and the new ES339 Pro seems a good start! HNDD!!

Re: NGD: 2011 Epiphone Dot Deluxe Flametop (Vintage Sunburst)
My "E" fell off the first day I brought it home
But all was good, Im not a fan of the pickguards, so it was off the first day too ![]() I realy like my Dot Deluxe. Stock pups were okay, just very weak.
