Re: Pickups -- what's stock on an Epi?

I use JCM800 2203 modified to 50W and I am completely satisfied with it. Specially since I sold my old JCM800 4x12" (4x80W) box and bought new MIC Marshall 2x12" (I don't know the model) which opens the amp sound so much. Beside Epi I have Gibson BFG made in 2007. It is very raw sounding guitar without compromise - just plug and fire it up. Burstbucker III is new to me (I had Ibanez LP De luxe made in 1971. and I upgraded it with 500T. It was pretty nice, but not nice as Gibson).
I just wanted to upgrade my Epi to make near-as-sounding-as some nice Gibson standard (Slash's is quite OK ). Also I am aware that is hard to get so I just want to get it powerful, warm and sweet but sharp and pretty defined tone. I know that Epi's wood is not as the same as Gibson's so I am looking for some combination pup-Epi's wood that you guys already tried and could recomend it to me.

You know what, before you'll buy new pickups, try to remove the covers from original pickups, it makes a big difference in the tone, just try it and then consider buying new ones. That's my advice.

Well pups are already without covers (look at the avatar pic). It sounds really fine, specially when the amp is on 2; I just want to upgrade it. Since there is a few or none of craftmen here who could take my demands seriously (like changing the complete wiring or some othe delicate stuff), I decided just to change pups. It is unfortenately the only "harmless" solution for the people here who take care of guitar reparement business. Or even for me who just play it.
As I wrote before there is no chance to take some pups from the store, install them, don't like'em and turn them back. If I want some change, I have to buy it first and return'em only if they're wracked. Shitty situation picking up some knowledge from the Forum but I have faith in you guys.
Thanx!

Re: Pickups -- what's stock on an Epi?

If you look for good, fat, round tone and are willing to invest, the Gibson Classics are a good choice.
You might also go for the Gibson Burstbuckers, which are just WAY COOL in vintage sounds (three different versions - concerning output).

The "Slash pickup", which is the Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro is also a wonderful pickup for what you intend.

I lately played an Epi at a friend's, that was just recently converted by installing the new DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAFs. Weeeeehaw, now THAT was a pleasure, too !!!
