Les Paul Stetsbar Tremolo?

I'm thinking of putting a Stetsbar Tremolo in one of my les pauls just to have some versatility, And one use them? are they good? keep in tune? any cons? etc. Thanks!

Re: Les Paul Stetsbar Tremolo?

I have one on my Epi Prophecy GX and it's fine. You can set them to float or stop, they work either way. Mine has always held the tuning, no problem there at all. Simple to install and Eric Stets is there to help if you have any issues. It bolts on by using the tailpiece anchors (you can see the screws in my second pic with the white nylon washers under the screws) and you remove the bridge and bridge posts. Then it has a foam pad that goes under it to fill in the gap from the carved top and to protect the finish.

Wow. I generally don't like anything but a Bigsby on a Les...and even then it should only be on Ebony. But DAMN!!! That thing screams ROCK! They should've used those on the Lifeson models.

There are a bunch of pics around of different guys who put a Stets on the regular Axcess. Look very cool! I have always used Les Trems since '81. I used Bigsby's in the 70's, but always thought they were big and clunky, so I went with Les Trems after they were invented.

I tried one on the Prophecy first, but with the 2-knob setup the bar was really close to the volume knob and made it hard to do volume work. So I tried the Stets to see how that would work and it's definitely all I'll buy from now on. Plus, they changed the design of the Les Trem and I'm not real impressed with them anymore. Plus, they don't float of course.

Here's the 1981 Les Trem design;

Re: Les Paul Stetsbar Tremolo?

Still diggin' the Stets. My #1 is a nice little Ebony, but still has no Bigsby. No need. Not for the style of music I play. The only thing I need a little "whammy" for is a couple of VH tunes, but I've got the Strat copy for that.

At any rate, if I were to put a vibrato system on an LP, the guitar would pick its own system.

For example, a BB3 would have to have a gold B7, whereas a nice plaintop or plustop would get the Stets (IMO...).

That's just me and the way I think. I've seen several members here with all different types of LPs with Bigsbys that look great. Just not for me.

Re: Les Paul Stetsbar Tremolo?

I have nothing against Bigsbys. In the 70's when that's all we had I played the crap out of mine. But in the 80's with the advent of Les Trems, Kahlers, Wilkinsons and all, I liked the extra functionality and more compact, streamlined looks, so bigsbys fell by the wayside for me. If I bought a used LP that came with one though, I would leave it on and play it to death!

Re: Les Paul Stetsbar Tremolo?

How is the tone with these on? could you actually play EVH songs with these? I'm just debating right now between getting these or just find a technique to play around it.

I didn't really notice any change in sound from the stock tailpiece and TOM to this? The bridge on the Stets is a Gotoh and the whole bridge assembly moves with the bar. So you don't have the strings sliding over the saddles like you would on any other type of trem. So there's no loss of sustain or anything.

I tried remembering some Eddie and playing it on my GX, but the Prophecy is so different from any other Paul that I can't give you a definitive answer? I have the Dirty Fingers pickups, coupled with all of my electronics and I sound like me, not Eddie, sooo...
