Opinions wanted

Driving myself nuts with indecision. Replacing epi p90s with GFS mini humbuckers. Can't decide on:

mini 59 - vintage / 8.6k bridge with 7.5k neck

or

Fat mini - overwound / 12k neck with 8.8 neck

Like the p90s, but too noisey even with noisegate. Any idea what resistence the epi90s are?

Thanks!

Re: Opinions wanted

I gigged out last Thursday night and played my untouched (yet) 56GT to see how the P90s preformed on their own. It was fantastic. The only thing Im gonna change is to 50s wiring. Never had any noise at all. Did you guys ever think that you might have to much noisey cheap crap in your chain and P90 equiped guitar wasnt right for what ever it is your playing. If your just playing Rock/blues and you got all those effects your doing it wrong. I got one thing between my guitar and amp and thats the chord. I wish all you dudes buying the 56 just to turn around and put mini hums in would send me your "noisey" P90s. I cant help you man. Good Luck

Re: Opinions wanted

Looks like the Epi p90s are at 8.8k for resistance.

Gibson/Epiphone Pickups; DC-resistance & Magnets

Can't tell if that's for bridge or neck...I found this chart one time that listed all of Epi's pickup resistances, I'm sure this is it, but there was more detail to the chart I found. Either way, its a start!

Here to please amigo! What I don't see on the list is the stock pickups that come in a Les Paul Standard...

Re: Opinions wanted

I couldn't stand the "buzz" from the P 90s on my '10 MIC GT. I replaced the pups with Seymour Duncan noise canceling P 90s, and got rid of the buzz but kept the P 90 tone. It cost a few more $$ than any pups from GFS, but how much is keeping the P 90 tone worth? It is a shame that GFS doesn't offer noise canceling P 90s.

Re: Opinions wanted

That reference list is awesome. Thanks!

I like the sound of the p90s, but at high gain they require too much attention.

I've been reading that the pup route on the epi is shallow, making it difficult to just "drop in" another pu. Heard the GFSs did "drop in," and to be honest the price isn't bad and I've read good things. Didn't want to spend $200-$300 on a $500 guitar.

peace

Re: Opinions wanted

I must say that my stock P 90s didn't hum --- they buzzed, and very loudly. The buzz was worse the more gain that was dialed in on my amp. Even at "blues level" overdrive, the buzz absolutely ruined my whole sound.

Generally the pups that require routing out the pup cavities are only the noise canceling type like mine, and that is because they have a small coil on the bottom to cancel the hum. Not a big job. DIY or a luthier shouldn't charge much for it. And yup, my SD noise cancelers were $200 installed at my luthier. But it was either that or sell the guitar, the buzz was so bad. I wish GFS would make noise canceling P 90s at their usual price level, because they sure are needed on this guitar -- at least they were on mine.
