Gibson is getting pretty close to Epiphone!!

was doing some web searching today and I found out that a GC here are selling Gibsons for 1079,= EUR and I am not talking studio models. It is the Gibson Midtown Custom.

Looking pretty good. If you buy a Epiphone John Lennon Casino Vintage Sunburst it will set you back 750,= EUR that is only 250,= EUR difference if you bargain a little between a very good looking Gibson and a Epiphone

I say that Gibson is catching up on Epiphone

Time for some GAS??

The Midtown Custom is a great guitar at a more than great price

There are Japan or Korea made guitars out - for more €€ or $$

BTW it is not made like an usual semi-hollow or hollow guitar (with laminated wood)
it is more like a chambered solidbody with a plain top.

similar to an Epi WildKat

Malikon and SJM like this.

I would describe the sound somewhere between LP and ES-335
more like the Epi LP Ultra
It is bigger than a LP and smaller than an ES-335

There are some threads about the Midtown here

Midtown Custom

New Model: Gibson Midtown Custom

NGD! Gibson Midtown Custom Antique Natural

The wait is over......NGD Gibson Midtown Custom

Thanks Strange that Gibson after being raided by the government now are making reasonably affordable guitars in the way Fender dos. Dos Rosewood or ebony make that much of a difference?? Anyway..Thanks US government, for making Gibson make affordable guitars again

Yep, one can wonder about....
I don't know how they can make it at that price - but I'm glad they do

BTW, the Midtown Custom and the Standard have 'Richlite' fretboards
and they feel just fine

Think I am going for a ride next week to the local GC and hurt my credit card badly Anyway Paruwi, is it worth the extra cash compared to a Epi in your opinion?

My Epi Lucille (MiK) was 940 Euro with case back in 2007
now add two Burstbuckers and you are around 1100-1150 Euro
and it still would have been a Korean guitar with stock wiring and pots...

even compared to a 2012 MiC Epi with some updates you are at 800 Euro

It is worth the €€€€s

Holy moly! OMG, that's a great deal, binding and all, for at least grand less than an ES model. Dammit, dammit, dammit! All these sweet and cheap Gibsons coming out these days? I don't know how much I can stand anymore.

Schecter Guitar Research Corsair Bigsby Electric Guitar: Shop Guitars & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

You could buy a Schecter Corsair with a real ebony fretboard...for 800 dollars.

Just sayin'.

Ebony vs. Richlite...big difference, man.

There's a reason that's cheap.

But if you're only buying a guitar for the name on the headstock...more power to ya.

Mmm.. I have seen some demo's on youtube wit Ebony against rosewood or baked maple or whatever. Some difference but not that much. I wouldn't spend a extra grand for the same guitar just because it has Ebony. I don't know why a schecter would be a better guitar than this Gibson? I think it looks much nicer and I know one thing..It will be a worth a hole lot of more money after a few years if you ever decide you want something else. So what is cheap

The total wood supply of Gibson has been confiscated by the government. So instead of Ebony they now use Richlite and instead of Rosewood they now use baked maple. Paruwi is enthusiastic about. It makes Gibsons a lot cheaper

At MusicStore.de I can buy it for €965. Not bad... Maybe one of these days I should order one of them... just to be able to say that I have a Gibson...

So, does it mean that ALL Gibson guitars will have their price drastically decreased?

No !

Gibson is just using new/alternative material for the fretboard
because some of their fretboard-wood have been confiscated

Does that Schecter come without the 57 Cadillac bumper, I mean Bigsby?

Because that would be a deal-breaker for many of us.

It doesn't make too much sense for me. Would the original fretboard material be SO expensive to justify a so big difference (taking in consideration the price of the other models)? Does Midtown use a different wood for the fretboard than the other models? Also, only the Midtown fretboard wood was confiscated?

They're not dropping prices based on the cost of fret board wood nor manufacturing processes. They're marketing, test and otherwise.

The fretboard on the Midtown is made of 'Richlite' which is used on some other Gibsons, too.
If Gibson didn't get raided it probably would be made from rosewood....

The (cheap) price is (IMO) because it is not made like usually ES-335 types
(laminated maple and arched top) it is a chambered solidbody with a plain top
