so just saw this epi LP in the internet. looks like a rootbeer finish for a gibson. what the hell is this??

As a matter of fact, if Malikon didn't say that the other one is desertburst I would say that it too is rootbeer. Rootbeer is a bit darker though.

Did Epi ever do a Rootbeer finish? I would bet that it's some type of Honeyburst Plus-Top. The honeyburst finishes can vary SO much that they look like Ice-Tea to Rootbeer finishes. Regardless, its nice looking.
