Epiphone Black Beauty 3 & Bigsby...

Here is my Epi Black Beauty 3 with the Bigsby(- import).

I modified the Pick-up wiring. Now, the middle pick-up has its own Volume knob which was a Tone knob. The pick-up is also reversed, which gives it a more Treble than Rhythm sound. Now I can blend all three pick-ups with each other in whatever manner I wish or can activate just the middle pick-up by itself! Many combinations can be achieved.

The outer golden screws in the pick-up Mounting Rings were replaced by black screws and the Toggle Switch knob which was black is replaced with a Golden knob.

Further, I replaced the Tone and Volume knobs, which were Speed knobs, and which are now Bell knobs.

Had no problems removing the Tailpiece and the Studs; filled up the holes with the same diameter wooden plugs. Painted the top of them black. The plug at the bottom Stud hole, is where I extended the Ground wire from the Pick-ups and Pots electronics. So the Ground wire surfaced and, in the Bigsby spring-holder I drilled a small hole so that the Ground wire could fit through it and is than put in place and than the plastic wash could be applied with the spring; and that fulfills the Ground aspect.

The Bigsby is an excellent product. I am content! Easy to install; had no problems with it. I only had to modify the Strap Button (on the Epi) because it was about 4-5 mm not centered as it should, so, I filled the existing hole and centered a new hole to align it correctly. Than, I installed the Bigsby. If I had not conducted this procedure the Bigsby would have been mounted 'crooked'! Or, too high in proportion with the bridge and pick-ups, alignment.

Not bad, for an investment of about 680,- euros!

Thanks for reading, guys and gals...

Hi there....

Thank you.

Sounds excellent! Give it go....

Not really that hard to install as you can noticed from my posting. But, much patience is asked, though; if you can bring that up...all is possible.

Black Beauty with a Bigsby is gonna be one of my next projects.

I'd love to hear some clips of this thing in action!

Hi there....

I have played ALL types of music in the past from Top 10 POP(ulair) music, Country(-Rock), Blues(:Traditional and Blues Rock), even Abba (had female singers at the time), Asian Modern Music; am very experimental myself, just NO borders for me, so to speak. Like, Sympho-Rock; 80s was the time to play 'illogical' , so you play illogical guitar riffs, etc. Soul and Funk is also another thing; did that to: Soul-Rock and Funk-Rock. Still love the Old School Rock'n Roll going back to Bill Haley, Eddy Cochran, Gen Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Link Ray, Elvis and go so on. Played some of their stuff in the past, also. Have been playing guitar for some 44 years, now. So, my music vocabulary has accumulated, so to speak.

My main love is still ROCK. Played numbers almost of every known Rock Band, or in that direction in the past, from the Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, Purple, Sabbath, Humble Pie, Grand Funk, Blue Cheer, Hendrix and go so on.

Am still trying to set up a Rock project, now(; last band was a Blues-Rock band and a semi-Rock-Pop Country band with female singer). Still, in the Experimental Mode, of course, but, with allot of Vintage Rock riffs as the mentioned above bands. I just follow Evolution to where she takes me...

Very, very nice! I've thought about modding mine somehow, but I just love it so much the way it is I can't bear changing it.

Hi there...

Well, just let your intuition, lead you...

It is a big step if you do customize it. I loved my Epi in her original state also but, now with all the customized modifications I even lover her MORE...

The guitar is now more Versatile. The traditional Gibson 2 pick-ups sound set-up can be achieved and of course, the middle pick-up supplement adds an excellent sound feature which can only be obtained from a Gibson/Epi configuration set-up.

Further, now, Fender guitar sounds can be obtained. Which broadens your sound vocabulary, so to speak, and many many more.

The set-up now, you can activate the pick-ups with each other or single and achieve some 7 sound variations (inclusive Gibson 2 pu set-up) and...if you take it from the volume knob aspect, say, nr. 3-6-9/10 rolling to these mentioned numbers with one of the other pick-ups...there is still MORE variety of sounds! I think I counted about 21 different sound/blend variations!

So, as you can see...much more can be achieved now.

The Bigsby, can always come in handy. I composed tunes in the past with the use of a tremolo-arm which I did on my Zusuki Stratocaster as well as a Fender Strat I had decades ago. Now, I can do it with my Epi and the Bigsby. With the Fender arm you could only go Downward and with the Bigsby you can go Downward AND...Upward! Which adds quite more dimention into the uitilization of the tremolo feature and with combination with the Fender sounds I can achieve now, with my Epi configuration.
[*Just a side note on the Fender: with the knowledge that you can les'n the spring tension by removing springs but than it is not in the usual configuration; I was referring to. Tried it in the past but could not get used to it.]

I still have my Gibson (ex-)Deluxe which I (a friend spray painted; was a Car Customizer; begin 90s) customized back in the mid 80s from a Cherry Sunburst to Lemon Drop top, and replaced the small pick-ups with Humbuckers, which I think is Dimarzios. Which are FAT and with very much Sustain; non Passive pick-ups. Do not even need to add Gain or Fuzz or whatever. And, the wiring is now in the Out-Of-Phase mode(: Peter Green sound; LOVE what the man did in his Hay Day times...). Will soon put a switch or push-pull on it to make it Phase-In as well as Phase-Out. But anyways, this guitar will be my second guitar for the traditional Gibson sounds. I will just switch guitars, obviously.

So, I do not know if you have a back-up guitar?

Yeah, I have 6 back up guitars, a Gibson, 3 Jacksons, a Hamer and a cheapo BC Rich

I actually had a wiring diagram drawn up for me to wire the Black Beauty like you did, with the middle pickup on its own - but to be honest, I will never use it. I dont even use the middle position on a normal Les Paul, it's always bridge or neck. I've done coil-splits and stuff on a lot of guitars and they never get used.
So, I'll probably just leave the BB as it is. Although that Bigsby does look awesome.
