Making the back of my neck less "sticky"...

Hey guys,

Well...just some more beef I have with the Epi finish. I know a lot of people smoothen out the back of the neck on their guitars (ya know, the part that is in constant contact with the palm). Has anyone here done that to their guitar, presumably an an Epi LP? I'm really thinking about trying it cause the neck just feels too "sticky" on mine, even though I have been playing this guitar constantly for the past 2 years. How would I go about smoothening it out? Sand paper? What grade grit should I use (if thats what its called). Any specifics in the process? Help is greatly appreciated!!!

A lot of guys shave the back of the neck down to the wood and then oil with tung oil or boiled linseed... makes it as soft as silk!

Or in the interim, buy some of that fret spray lube... makes the back of the neck feel like glass!

Can't think of the name of it right now, but I've got 2 bottles in my guitar case... I'll check in the morning and let you know.

Re: Making the back of my neck less "sticky"...

depends on your playing style but you can get a professional to do it and when you order a new guitar you can get then to do it at the factory i know gibson dose it and iv got a few custom orders out of epiphone.

Re: Making the back of my neck less "sticky"...

hi all

i rubbed down the neck of my jazzmaster with
0000 grade steel wool, its very non-evasive

it works great and gives a really quick matt finish,
i only matts the laquer, you dont go near the wood

its also extremely easy to buff back to gloss
if you change your mind

disclaimer....
I have not done this to an epiphone
so maybe someone else may chime in,

the only thing i'm thinking is that the
jazzmaster has a natural maple neck
so tha my be more suitable, perhaps the
dark necks of the epi's may not look the same
after being amtted down a bit

cheers

I have a friend who uses this when he plays. He says it helps if your hands are sweaty and sticks to the guitar.

Re: Making the back of my neck less "sticky"...

Hey thanks for the replies guys. I went ahead and took some really fine grade sanding sponge and sanded the back of the neck. It feels super smooth now, but the difference while playing isn't a major one. I think my palm is just really soft or something. Maybe that Butt Powder might help!

There's a thread over on Harmony Central where this guy was showing his sheraton where he was sanding the back of the neck to make it smoother. I"ll try to find a link and post it here.

Steel Wool does it. Moving up and down the neck gently.

Nice! What that guy did to his polyurethane finish, I'm thinking about doing that on mine. I really hate the Epi finish. Anyway, after playing ALOT after sanding my neck down, it's starting to get "broken in" and feels super nice now!

I just think it is hella thick. Plus my LP looks like its covered in glass...almost looks kinda tacky. I also haven't heard alot of great things about new Chinese-made LP's. My friend has a 1996 Epi LP and I noticed the finish was thinner and the guitar sounds a bit more natural (i dunno if the process was different back then or if maybe its just the fact that its 11 years old). I dunno dude, i just make a big deal of little things...tone issues keep me up at night.

Yea, its like rubbing or polishing compound
works pretty good, but dont really espect to
loose the scratches, but it does make them look less
noticable.

That's what I use on all of my guitars, even the vintage ones.Alot of the stickiness is old sweat and skin oil.Another thing is to clean the back of the neck with Windex or a glass cleaner before doing this, and make sure you wash your hands good before you play!
