Duncan JB/Jazz or Dimarzio FRED & PAF Joe for Epi LP Sp. II

Hi this is my first post in this forum, I finally thought it would be better to register because some things are not that common to find out on the internet (i think).

Anyways, I have an Epi LP Special II (I know... I'll upgrade later) and have been thinking about modding up a little bit, just got it set up but still has problems with the G so I just ordered som wilkinson ez-lok tuners, I think I can switch them myself, worth a try.

So the next thing I'm thinking is changing the pickups, I really got into a les paul because of mainly but I like hard rock. I play in a pop rock covers and some originals band but I think that the LP sound feels better for me (mainly for my influences).

The thing is that I have narrowed down to two alternatives a Duncan JB/Jazz set or a Dimarzio FRED on bridge and PAF Joe on neck (old satriani configuration) because I like the classic sound but I feel that satriani has a bit of a modern sound so I think its a bit clearer.

Has anyone here used any of those pickup sets? They are around the same price so I think I could go for anyone and if I upgrade to an Epi LP Std. I could use those pickups there also.

I use a Fender Frontman 65R, I love it because on clean sounds It feels like macaroni (or spaghetti I think ) and my pedalboard, for now, has a modtone tuner, bad monkey, DS-1, cool cat tremolo, cool cat chorus and belcat analog delay (same as modtone but cheaper XD)

I wouldnt upgrade the special II. Get a better guitar first. Just my two cents.

Indeed I'm planning to upgrade at some point but having to pay $240 for a special II, $470 for a Std. or $730 for a Std. Plus Top (third world country prices) it's a bit harder to upgrade quickly. Thanks anyways for your advice

So far the Duncans have full support, I'll wait a bit to see if someone says something about the dimarzios.

I have a Duncan 59 neck and a Duncan JB bridge. It is a very popular combination.

I like the SDs myself, but for the LPII I would look at a lower priced option. I have GFS pickups in my EPI Std and have found them to be a nice upgrade over the stock PUPs for a fraction of the cost of SDs or DiMzarzios.

If you take this into consideration, it's not a bad idea to get the pick-ups that you really want as you will install them in your new guitar when the time comes. A SD Hot Rodded set is pretty good and very reasonably priced for quality pups.

Fair point. If the pickups will travel to another (better) guitar, then get whatever would seem to be the best long-term solution.
