Recording help!?!?

Hey I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this so I'm going to post it somewhere else to but...

I've been doing lots of recording latley and i have a fairley decent mic but everytime i record the guitar sounds real thin no matter how i mic the amp...

And It's not the amp because in reality my sound is thick and nice...

Any help?

Thanks

Re: Recording help!?!?

This is how we do it in Toproom studio, most of the time:

Also, you need to EQ it properly. And don't scoop the mids on the amp settings panel, even if you prefer it like that when you play. It will just sound thin and weak on a recording.

Re: Recording help!?!?

I record live always. I place the mic with the head facing toward the edge of the speaker cone on a 45 degree angle. Never thin, always pretty true to sound. The center of the cone will give you the most highs, so don't face the head of the mic towards it.

Re: Recording help!?!?

I have taken to direct recording using cab sims and preamps, choosing to place effects in a later time.

Re: Recording help!?!?

It could be your mic; I always record via line in to avoid tone loss (and recording volumes) you 'might' get more bass by putting the mic behind the amp / cab but then you would loose highs.

Re: Recording help!?!?

Don't you find that Line in loses something verses speaker air movement?

Re: Recording help!?!?

Yeah but its alot easier; less setup and I don't have to upset the neighbours.

Re: Recording help!?!?

My on the road gear for recording is a Boss BR1200, Les Pauls through a Digitech RP250, so I can record in hotel rooms and not piss anyone off.

I am rebuilding my studio at home, with a Mac using ProTools, Apogee interface, and the assorted Shure mics, rack gear and such that I have collected over the last 30 years.

Tracking your guitar with different guitars and effects and panning to different spots in the mix will thicken it up.

Re: Recording help!?!?

Kølabrennern has it right.
a sure sm57 close and a large diaphram for ambient room. I'd put the large diaphram just off axis of the same cone though. so there aren't any phasing issues.
rock on Kølabrennern

I have a good teacher, haha. Anyway, in the picture where you see only the single, big mic; that's the setup we most often use. However, using a Neumann mic at thousands and thousands of dollars in price is not very budget friendly, so the SM57 and a simple large diaphragm should do the trick just fine. The reason behind placing mics at different cones is because all of the speaker elements have their slightly own character. The phase problem is easily adjustable most of the time, when one is in the control room listening and the other is standing by in the recording room, ready to adjust either mic a few millimeters.

Soloben: Try angling the mic many different ways. And as mentioned earlier, recording at least two tracks and panning them left-right is alpha and omega here.

Edit: Or just try giving up micing your amp and test some free ampsim VST plug-ins. SimuAnalog Guitar Suite is really neat, and completely free of charge: http://www.simulanalog.org/guitarsuite.htm
