Epiphone Zakk Wylde

has anyone noticed how the neck pickup in the epiphone Zakk Wylde sounds like its been played from inside a box or something? Mine sounds ridiculously clogged.

Re: Epiphone Zakk Wylde

Mine sounds great actually. I have no complaints whatsoever on either pickups or the guitar in general.

Bad soldering possibly, check the solder joints.

not on a epi...

Check their height, my EMG 85 sounds muddy if it is not at its proper height.

Thats how my 85 sits.. my 81 is really close to the strings.. But thats how you are supposed to do an 81.

Re: Epiphone Zakk Wylde

yes thats what i understand, the pups have to be placed extremely close to the strings to sound best....i have to get me the Zakk Wylde LP, but not the Gibson , but the Epi version, had the chance to finally play the Gibson version today and found the neck to be somewhat slow and "sticky', probably do to the finish, wheres as the Epi was fast and silky, again probably due to finish...i find the poly so much better then the nitro...but thats just me maybe....

Re: Epiphone Zakk Wylde

For the neck pickup, try adjusting the pickup height like the others suggested abit further away from the strings. Put it too close to the strings and it will mud up your sound.

Re: Epiphone Zakk Wylde

Possible some resistance in the wiring, check to see if the wires have not been tamperd with and that the soldering is connected properly.

I dont know about the passive emg hz, but my emg 85 can sound muddy if its not low enough.. oddly enough my emg 81 sounds best when its really close to the strings. I guess that just by design.

Re: Epiphone Zakk Wylde

hi, im new to this forum. i have a big question on zakk wylde pick up set 81/85. i have wired my epiphone zakk wylde with the zakk wylde set exactly as shown in the circuit diagrams. The pickups only work with the jack halfway in and the pickup connectors are the correct way up(as advised on emgs site)i have the standard epiphone 3 way switch. can anyone advise what may be wrong??

Re: Epiphone Zakk Wylde

the chord may be junk. also check the jack it may be grounding out when the plug is inserted all the way. unbolt it bring it out through the control cavity and insert the plug and see if anything looks off. when you soldered and reinstalled it you may have bent one of the contacts.
