Re: My '04 '56 Goldtop

yeah, I've seen pickmarks on the pickguards.. but never on the bodies.

i think I prefer the PG on my Goldtop, whereas I didn't like it on my Vintage Sunburst

The PG is all a matter of preference...there reaaally is no answer to that.

Re: My '04 '56 Goldtop

If you think about it, especially with the LP figured top... the pickguard is up high enough to get scratched (by a really wild player maybe...) But I cant see someone using enough repetitive force and steep enough downstroke the scratch an LP body with a plastic pick...

That said, Ive got my pickgaurd securely in place on my VM Studio (which has no paint)

Actually...... the pickups I have in there are aftermarkets. They're Seymour Duncan STK-P1 P90s, which are hum-cancelling.

So I'm kinda lucky they match the pickguard as closely as they do.

As for the gold reflector knobs....... you can get those pretty much anywhere...... I got mine at Guitarfetish.com:

4 Vintage "Gibson-Style" SG, ES-345 Chrome Topped Gold Bell Knobs

sweet, thanks, Coop. I might pick up those and those pups, I love the p90 sound but that cycling hum gets old.

Its a very classy and good looking guitar; how do p90s sound anyway I've never had the chance to try one.

Here's some clips of mine if you're curious how they sound:

Here's with the stock P90s:

YouTube - Epiphone '56 Re-issue goldtop

Here's with the Seymour Duncan STK-P1 P90s:

YouTube - Epiphone 56 Re-issue gold top new pickups

And, after you listen, you'll probably think the stock pups sound better...... and they do in these clips..... but the Seymour Duncans are actually AWESOME pickups!! I love 'em!!

And they don't buzz and hum at higher gain and volume settings.

Re: My '04 '56 Goldtop

hey, cooper,

have you had any experience with the P90 sized humbuckers or know who makes em? I'd like to put one those duncan P90s you have in the neck and try one of the others in the bridge.

If you mean the mini-humbuckers....... no, I havent' had any experience with them.

But I do highly recommend the Seymour Duncan STK-P1 P90s. I LOVE 'em!!!!!!!

Buy Seymour Duncan STK-P1 Stacked P-90 Single-Coil Pickup at Musician's Friend

Oh..... I must add...... If you get the Seymour Duncan STK-P1 P90s, you will most likely have to get your pickup cavities routed deeper to fit them.

It's a pain in the ass... but TOTALLY worth it!!

My bodies are always marked up - and on the OTHER side of the strings from the pickguard!

I play pickguardless, and the area that I uncover usually stays pretty clean anyways. Boy would my LP look stupid with a guard on the top side!!

DJ - great looking GT - I love P90's.

It was. I sold it last year. The pickup is some kind of DiMarzio.
I am sure it is still available.

Why don't you like the ones in your guitar? The guy I sold my last Gold Top to love the stock pickups. He was approached by a local hot shot guitarist after a show one night and was asked about the guitar, it sounded so good! The guy who was asking plays several REAL Gretsches through a REAL Fender Bassman, and knows tone!

Re: My '04 '56 Goldtop

Oh its not that I don't like the stock pickups, I'm just a tinkerer by nature.

I just wish all my plastics matched. The switch washer is one colour cream, the PG is another, and the pups are another.

I think I am gonna get a set of those gold reflector knobs tho.

Maybe LPO68 has a set you can borrow.

The plastic on those Epiphone Gold Tops is more of a yellow color than the beige on Gibsons, ain't it?

yeah, the pups are a beige and the PG and the switch washer are two colours of creme.

At least I don't have pickup rings to match as well.
