Re: how do i remove humbucker covers?

If you remove them, you would have to wax seal them back on, if you want to put them back on. But to remove you would have to unsolder then from the bottom plate, or cut the solder and they will pull off with some force. There is a small chance you can damage the pickup doing this. You could rip a wire out from the wax not seperating. Not recommended just to see what it would look like without it. Look online, you will get all the pics you want.

Re: how do i remove humbucker covers?

Don't use a solder gun ... the pickup will serve as a heatsink and you'll only end up burning yourself and making a mess.

Just cut the solder joints with a razor and slide off the covers.

I personally like the look of the nickel covers. You may not. I am sure you can find some pics of them off.

To be honest you should just buy an open coiled pickup instead of removing the covers. I've seen some pictures of horrible colors underneath those covers. Also if you remove them you have a lot of wax to melt and tear off of the pickup.

A Dremel with a cutting wheel, if you have access to one, would be quicker, and you will be less likely to cut yourself. You may need to heat the cover slightly to soften the wax (if it is a potted pickup) to make it easier to remove.

Re: how do i remove humbucker covers?

I experimented with my stock pups when I replaced them as well. I removed the cover on one of them. I was able to take a toothbrush and clear the wax out. I also had no problem of the plastic being discolored. Maybe some of them do, but mine came out good. I am planning to re wax the cover back on. I think the stock Epi pups are actually real good. But obviously you can get better from SD or someone.

Re: how do i remove humbucker covers?

It,s been a while since your post, but check out guitarfetish.com. They have a great selection of custom made pickups at half the cost. They ship factory direct so thier cheaper. I put a set of paf's in my son's epi lp standard, they sound great.

Re: how do i remove humbucker covers?

I just took the bridge cover off and to my surprise, a zebra! I'm leaving the neck cover on. The wax was not a problem at all, there wasn't much on it and it was easy to get off. Looks great.

LOL! You do realize that you responded in a thread from October 2009, right?

Indeed... but maybe he got some useful info from the thread and subsequently added his experience..?

There's another thread currently running in which the poster was partly given a little grief for not searching out info on previously discussed topics, so as much as I get ya 6th, striking the balance between endless duplicate threads and digging up older ones is a tough thing to balance

Re: how do i remove humbucker covers?

I wouldn't recommend taking the covers off. The bobbins will look gross and potentially deformed and putting the covers back on would be a major pain. Potting pickups is not a fun job.
