I've noticed that a lot of the fake guitars on ebay are being sold as "New". I wouldn't trust any of them. Here is my email to Gibson about "New" guitars being sold on ebay:

Just curious - Are legitimate Gibson/Epiphone resellers allowed to sell/auction new guitars on ebay? I ask because if they are not, it would just make it that much easier to spot fakes.

I would pefer all junior members to stay off this thread unless you are asking if a guitar is legit.

I am putting down new rules for this thread.

Junior members can only ask if a guitar is fake.

People responding to junior members tell them if it's legit or fake. That is all

Senior members can get small pointers to reasons if the guitar they are looking at is real or fake.

Junior members are not allowed to tell people if it is fake or legit. If a junior member does this, disregard their comment.

VIP members are allowed to do anything, however GnR or myself overrides any vote.

If you choose not to listen to any advice posted here, go ahead and buy it and take your chances. Don't come crying back here if you purchased a fake

I realize these rules singles out a few people here, and that is why I will nominate certain members here so they get VIP status for this thread.

I also realize this is not fair to all members, but all someone posted earlier, we need organization. If everything and his mother gves an oppinion the buyer will be confused as to who is right.

Senior members are allowed to post if they think it is real or fake.

Agreed ^, Theres way too many damaging opinions here, and some have left a sour taste with some members. To newer folks, If you ask for advice, and that advice came from a member that has no "VIP" by their name, the advice is not valid unless backed by a VIP member. Should you choose to take that advice anyway, youre on your own.

And as SIN said, He and I reserve the right to override any decision.

Hi all.

New here so go easy on me. I have played guitar on an off for about 5 years but decided to have a good bash at learning properly. So I thought i would park me Fenix Strat up an get an Epiphone Les Paul.
I won one auction on eBay for a black Custom. I got an e-mail a few days after paying to say that the guitar had been lost and he would send another. I then got another e-mail saying that his Paypal account had problems and my money would be refunded (which it was). Another e-mail said that he would personally deliver a guitar to my house and I could pay him cash. I obviously declined.
I then won another auction for another black Custom for £270. It was delivered two days later. It was very well packaged in an Epiphone box with a poster, lead and instruction booklet.
I inspected the guitar very closely and began to get suspicious. The quality was not what I would expect on a guitar around the £300 mark. The round cover on the back wasn't perfectly round. The screws looked cheap (I used to work in a screw factory !) and the frets near the neck were a liitle rough.
After finding this excellent thread and doing the checks that y'all suggested (the pick guard hole was the most obvious). I decided it was a fake and contacted the seller who said he was shocked and has agreed to refund me.
I have today been to a reputable guitar shop and bought a genuine Epiphone Les Paul Standard for £350.
Having both side by side the differences are very obvious.
The fake sounded ok but the Epiphone sounds stunning. That famous sustain is mind blowing if you haven't experienced it before.

Sorry about the long post but if it prevents somebody buying a dud then it was worth it.

Dont buy any of those, all the trans-blue pics are of a good guitar, but all the sellers are selling fakes in their stores, dont risk it, IMO.

I have played guitar on an off for about 5 years but decided to have a good bash at learning properly. So I thought i would park me Fenix Strat up an get an Epiphone Les Paul. I won one auction on eBay for a black Custom. I got an e-mail a few days after paying to say that the guitar had been lost and he would send another. I then got another e-mail saying that his Paypal account had problems and my money would be refunded (which it was). Another e-mail said that he would personally deliver a guitar to my house and I could pay him cash. I obviously declined. I then won another auction for another black Custom for £270. It was delivered two days later. It was very well packaged in an Epiphone box with a poster, lead and instruction booklet. I inspected the guitar very closely and began to get suspicious. The quality was not what I would expect on a guitar around the £300 mark. The round cover on the back wasn't perfectly round. The screws looked cheap (I used to work in a screw factory !) and the frets near the neck were a liitle rough. After finding this excellent thread and doing the checks that y'all suggested (the pick guard hole was the most obvious). I decided it was a fake and contacted the seller who said he was shocked and has agreed to refund me. I have today been to a reputable guitar shop and bought a genuine Epiphone Les Paul Standard for £350. Having both side by side the differences are very obvious. The fake sounded ok but the Epiphone sounds stunning. That famous sustain is mind blowing if you haven't experienced it before. Sorry about the long post but if it prevents somebody buying a dud then it was worth it. Andrew. ps The ebayer I bought from (2nd one) had 200+ ratings with 100% Feedback !
