Theres nothing wrong with shopping Ebay, youve just gotta be careful and well educated. Beware of those whos auctions look a lot like a major sellers auction and the guy's only got 3 guitars posted and 10 or so feedbacks. Thats probably a scam.
Look for the "wordology" as I call it- lowsy use of English, claims that it will ship direct from the factory (that never happens) and 10 days shipping time but no Epiphone box. If you see stuff like that, dodge it like a hot bullet no matter how enticing the guitar might look, youre gonna take it in the shorts otherwise. Not to mention that you may very well be stuck with it once you get it.
Last but not least, if anythings questionable- bring it here for everyone to see. It always helps to have a second opinion.

Yeah looks an awesome guitar GNR, i only just noticed your location! I live 5 miles from a town called Chesterfield here in England.
Quick question for you all; i'm looking at getting an Epi Les Paul Standard Plus Top (Lefty), i have seen them online for $560 brand new delivered from a reputable site or a 2nd for $460. Do you think it's worth taking the $100 discount for "a minor flaw" or going for the perfect '08 model?

can I ask where youve seen them, Ive been after a lefty plus top for ever...? Never seen them

Id take a serious look at the 2nd half the time you wont even notice whatever the flaw is..

Hey folks, im new to the forum and was wondering if someone maybe able to help me or point me in the right direction.

Brought a 2nd hand Epip LP last saturday, on ebay, of all places. And discoverd this forum and thread on the sunday(hows that for timing) while looking for some mods. Based on what I've seen in this thread I'm thinking I may have brought a copy : (.

Just wondered if i could get a second opinion if anybody is willing...

its not looking good im afraid

check under the bridge to see if it has epiphone cast into it, this also applys to the jack plug and switch (for which youll have to take off the covers) They should both have epiphone engraved into them.

If the advert you bought it from said it was shipped direct from the factory its defo a fake im afraid - contact ebay, paypal and the seller get your money back...

found this forum on google while looking for some advice on how to spot a fake epiphone. i found this one on ebay:

epiphon sg mit marshall-verstärker und zubehör bei eBay.de: E-Gitarren (endet 27.08.08 11:50:31 MESZ)

i am not an expert on epiphone models, but this one sure does not look like a "real" epiphon sg. have you ever seen an epiphone guitar with pickups like that?

That looks more like an lp thats been cut about but want that how early SG's were made?? - an epi SG looks pretty much the same as a gibson sg in bodyshape.

Its also missing an input jack on the body - but those pictures are diabolical...

i already contacted the dealer and asked for serial number and some close up pictures.

an epi SG looks pretty much the same as a gibson lp in bodyshape

i noticed the switch which is at the same position on gibson lps. but the overall bodyshape to me looks like a mixed gibson lp and epiphone sg - i cant find any picture on google images of an early sg modell with a switch Oo

Ignore what I said - Ive edited it - Ive been up all night and Ive got a hangover!! An epi sg obviously looks nothing like a gibson LP (I meant sg obviously!!)

there are plenty of epis on google images with P90 pups in but with the sharp horn on the top and rounded horn on the bottom that still looks like a hacked about LP to me...

right obviously. but "lp thats been cut about" is exact what the item looks like - bodyshape somwhat like an sg with fuller "low"body, pickup and switch position from lp.

if he send any better pics see if you can get one of the inside of that top horn...

Also of the neck join too, oddly that looks more like an SG neck than an LP one..
