Epiphone Custom with Coil Splitting?

Hi there! I've just joined the fold and bought an Epiphone Les Paul Custom in Arctic White. Mine has coil tapping but all the other customs in the shop did not. It is a made in Indonesia and dated 06/2010. Looking at the Epiphone website it doesn't show that the Custom has this feature. Are there any others out there or is mine a limited edition?. Cheers.

I know some who custom wired them for coil tapping. So, was yours by chance custom upgraded, or maybe custom ordered. Kinda like a custom ordered automobile, comes from the factory, then upgraded at the dealership per customers specs. Yours may have been dealer customized new for a customer that never picked it up, assmuming you bought it new.

back in the mid 1970s, I bought a custom one off Rickenbacker 4001 like that. It was a custom all blacked out 4001 that was custom ordered from Rickenbacher, and finished the customization at the dealer. It hung on the wall because it was at the dealer for over a year and the original person whom ordered it never picked it up. I swooped in, and bought it off the wall. Wish I still had that Ric now tho, I have seen custom one off 4001's sell for in the 10K$ range...

Mine was new from an Epiphone dealer in the UK and it came out of the box yesterday I was told. I asked if it was a limited edition and he said it wasn't. None of the other Customs had the coil tapping.

Re: Epiphone Custom with Coil Splitting?

That's really odd. The only Epi I have ever heard of having stock coil splits is the Trad Pro. Can you post up some pics so we can see it?

Sounds odd.

Coil tapping and coil splitting aren't the same thing BTW.

The new 2010 Tribute was the only other Epiphone with the coil tapping in the shop, though they did have a Traditional Pro in last week which also has this capability.

Here is, hopefully, a picture of her. You can see the marketing card round the volume controls. I played it in the shop and can confirm that it does indeed coil tap... and what is the difference between tapping and splitting then? I'm a newbie to this I'm afraid.

Re: Epiphone Custom with Coil Splitting?

Very strange they they call it "coil tapping", on the tributes it just says "push pull series/parallel" and that it's on the volume pots (whereas on the tribute it's on the tone pots). Never seen a custom like that...

Re: Epiphone Custom with Coil Splitting?

Coil splitting is when you split a humbucker so only one coil is in use.
Coil tapping is similar but applies to single coils, and allows you to use less of a single coil's winding.

I wouldn't worry about, it, everyone seems to call it coil tapping, I'm just a bit surprised it would come LABELED like that since it is actually incorrect.

Most people don't know what it means, and I had to look it up to find out myself since I don't know crap about single coils!

I think it's cool they're offering this as standard equipment on some models like the Custom. Not like it's really costing them anything.

They announced it in Aug 2010....

Now we are proud to announce the introduction of the Epiphone ProBucker™ pickup. Currently offered in the LP Traditional PRO (and other models coming soon), these pickups are an inspired version of Gibson's BurstBucker, featuring unevenly wound coils and Alnico-II magnets that replicate that "Patent Applied for" airy tone. You'll love the way they sound!

Re: Epiphone Custom with Coil Splitting?

I just came across these newer customs myself about two weeks ago. The ebony boards and coil slitting features were a couple of nice touches and I came close to getting an ebony one. Ended up buying a 1960 V3 instead, however.

Yep! There's something about the Ebony and Gold though that just makes that Gal super sexy. Nice score, congrats! She's beyond beautiful.

Wow

That board is dark... where did you get it? If Epiphones started putting ebony boards on Customs I might shriek like a little girl.

The new customs I came across were at my local GC. Had a few of them hanging on the wall. They were most definitely some good looking axes. I imagine that they should be able to be found at most Guitar Centers and probably MF or other online Epi retailers.

Re: Epiphone Custom with Coil Splitting?

Some beautiful guitars in here! Can't wait to get mine!

An interesting note though... Just visited guitar center and they have an alpine white custom with coil tapping AND ebony board! It definitely looked like ebony when I grabbed it and the tag said it was too. It also said it has probuckers 2 and 3 pickups (correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they're the same as the Epi Trad Pro). The one I have coming is a used model from musiciansfriend but I really hope it has these upgrades. I may return it and buy a new one possibly...

That is a beautiful guitar. I put a deposit on one today myself. Mine must be a last years model, because it doesn't have coil splitting and it has a rosewood board.

I have a set of Tom Holmes pickups with gold covers that will go in her once I've paid it off. I will also install RS Guitarworks pots and TonePro bridge and stop tail. These additions will make a wonderful guitar even better imo. Tom Holmes are among my favorite pickups.

The Custom has a new spec, that includes Coil-Splitting and a Hardcase. We're just seeing the first production ones come through now (funnily also in white too! - Not seen the new Ebony ones yet)

This has been on the cards for a while, after speaking with one of the guys at Gibson it seems it's been done to give the Custom an actual spec increase over the Standard rather than have it feel like you were just paying the extra 20/25% for a Standard in a Tux' with some Binding and Gold Hardware.

I think it's a great upgrade by Gibson, and also the Standard's just came down just under 10% in price too.

I'll check the Custom we just got in and see if it has an Ebony board too *EDIT 20/9/2011* - Checked the Custom we had out on the wall and indeed it has an Ebony 'board!

yeah... some guys told me Iīm mad about that....

Hope they will make it in generally so, itīs a real upgrade for the Custom Model, plus the splitable Pickups... fine.

I know, that the are lots of experts out there, saying that MIC Epis are quasie garbage... but my opinion, and my experiance over the last 12 years with Epiphone, is, that they are makin not a bad job at the moment.

I have 4 MIC Les Pauls (LPC, 2 Stds., 1 Studio), have one MIK SG (95 ltd. Maestro Mod.) and had several LPs over the year..
To this, there are 6 Gibson (3 SGs, 60s Tribute, Trad., Studio WB) guitars, which I really love....

For me, the actual Epiphone models (and not only the actual) are inexpensive, well built and good sounding guitars. Not less, not more...
Donīt understand, why they are so often bashed... for me they are absolutely OK, I love them and their sound, look & feel make me lucky...
...and thatīs a good thing (for me).

folks... have ay nice day

Re: Epiphone Custom with Coil Splitting?

i have one too, the board is dark like the nightfall but its not ebony, i have a prophecy sg with ebony board and u can see the grains are tighter and almost maintenance free. It also sounds brighter. BUT, whatever gibson did here, its a really a nice looking board.

i also noticed the pickup stickers are different from other models but i dont know if it matters lol
