am I wrong?
OK...so the wifey says she wants to learn to play and I agreed to give her beginner lessons at her own pace...trouble is...I really hate seeing my babies in someone elses hands-for any reason. Heres the deal I made her: I'll buy (just) one more and if you are serious about learning, it'll be yours. Seems reasonable doesnt it? Now...I kinda dont wanna part with it--havent even gotten it yet and I know its gonna need a little tweaking and set up before it reaches its potential but...here she is, my latest. A 2003 Korean (all 3 of mine are MIKs) Blue Quilt top. Gonna be hard to let her go....

Re: am I wrong?
So long as she doen't get pissed you get a new guitar out of it. She could absolutely get pissed though.

Re: am I wrong?
a deal's a deal - you said if she sticks with it, it's hers. You keeping it would be shitty on your part.
That being said, chances are fair she won't stick with it... how many people try and give up after 2 months? LOTS. But you can't be a dick about it. (I'm NOT saying you are, I'm just sayin'...) that's a killer axe, by the way.

Re: am I wrong?
ok-I DO see everybodies point, but the part you DONT know is that she undertook this whole "learn to play" venture about 3 months ago. Since then she has sat down with a guitar a grand total of 4 times-each time less than a half hour. I think she is falling into the category of those (I have seen many) who believe that when they see others play and it looks easy, it should be really easy to learn-once she realized its not as easy as she thought, she switched over to "...if I JUST had the RIGHT guitar..." Originally, my 2nd one was supposed to be hers, but when I got it home and she hadnt even picked it up after 2 weeks, I started calling it mine and she said fine. I guess time will tell. BTW-same woman who wanted to be a semi-pro photographer so I bought her a thousand dollar Canon DSLR and shes used it 5 times. Never know--thinking about signing her up for lessons with somebody else....maybe its just a me thing.

Re: am I wrong?
Two thoughts: One, you made the deal. Hold up your end. As it sounds, you might be getting it back anyway. And, would she really not let you play her guitar afterwards, if you really wanted to?
Two: I have learned that only rarely should people try to teach their spouses anything like this. There's just something that changes from the marriage relationship to the teacher-student relationship. I may give my wife a few pointers about something if she asks (but it won't be in music, since she's got her master's in performance), but I won't take on the job of instructor. There's way more qualified people than me. |

Re: am I wrong?
Forgive me if this comes over the wrong way but I don't think it's very respectful to your wife for you to be criticising her on a public forum, however much you think the criticism is deserved.
And, after being told by most in answer to your original question that, yes indeed you are wrong, to defend your position with another example of her 'unreasonableness' is, well, at the very least, childish.

Re: am I wrong?
my wife smashed my Les Paul on the side walk about 5 times........so I have no real input for you bro. If your wife is rad, let her play yours, who cares. Shes not gonna hurt it. Only you know what your relationship with her so its up to you. I say let her play away on your axe then you'll probably end up with another one anyway. I personally think its cool you got a girl whos into playing. So in my eyes your a lucky dude.

Re: am I wrong?
I dig blue guitars. Especially "blue burst" quilt tops.
What you should've done, though, it bought her an ugly guitar. Easier to give up.

This cracked me up. I knew a guy who`s wife threw his out a 4 story window. I read somewhere, I think it was at Gibson, about common repairs they do to guitars. Many of them are the pissed off wife. I`m not married, don`t care to be, but if a woman smashed one of my guitars, she's gone. It's hilarious when it happens, not to me though.
