Epiphone Custom w/ EMGs?
Hows the epiphone custom sound with EMG 81/85s?
My current situation is: Gibson Goth with vitamin Q's Epiphone Custom I am thinking of making one of my guitars a metal guitar so my possibilites are: 1)Gibson with EMGS and put the vitamin Q's on the Epiphone Custom pr 2)Gibson with vitamin Q's and Epiphone w/ EMGs The vitamin Q's just cant with withstand metal, too vintage sounding so i reckoned i wanted to make one of mine a metal and one of mine have a seet vintage vibe to it. Which one do you reckon i should do if you were in my shoes? Cheers

Re: Epiphone Custom w/ EMGs?
i have a epi standard with emgs in it. Your custom will sound almost identical to mine because there really are very few differences between the epi models due to the lack of an ebony fingerboard. Especially if you do not have an elitist model.
Mine sound really good for what i like to play. Pinch harmonics come out very easily and they have a nice chunk to them. Also i wired mine to 18 volts so the cleans are pretty decent IMO, but they sure dont clean up like a set of Burstbuckers. Honestly both of the les pauls will sound very very similar with those emg's installed. I love emg's but lets face it, they take away that iconic les paul sound and replace it with the emg sound ( which i personally like). Thats why so many hate emg pickups. Hope that helps you out some.

Re: Epiphone Custom w/ EMGs?
i have an epi custom with the emg 85 and 81 and the sound is great for metal, but like wantsa said, they do take away that burstbucker sound but if you like metal, i suggest u get them.
here a couple of pics with mine in it. ![]()

Re: Epiphone Custom w/ EMGs?
Thanks wantsa58.
yeah, i dont mind having one of my axes to sound like emgs the Gibson standard pickups just dont cut it for metal. With vitamin Qs it doesnt cut it way even more. The metal distortion sounds just way too muddy, perfect for overdrive and classic dist. though. So EMGs for metal huh? p.s what a sweet looking axe! reminds me of Buckethead but with black p.u

Re: Epiphone Custom w/ EMGs?
Yeah if you like how zakk wylde's guitars sound then you will love the pickups. When i get a gibson standard i will be in the same dilemma as you, because i wont be able to decide if the gibson gets the emg's and the epi gets the gibson pickups or vice versa.
Also remember to raise that 81 really close to the strings. They pull less ( magnetically) than a standard pickup and will actually sound better really close to the strings. On the 85 mine actually has to sit insinde the pickup ring to match the 81 because the 85 has more output. Just tinker with it some and when you get it matched up right they sound really great.

Re: Epiphone Custom w/ EMGs?
Put the EMG's in the Epi LP Custom and then put the Vitamin Q's on the Gibson so you have the great rock sound on the Gibson and the crazy heavy metal sound on the Epi.

Re: Epiphone Custom w/ EMGs?
i have the zw epi with the emg hzs and they are pretty sweet and ive tried some guitars with active emg's but if you want killer tone for roughly same price then get seymour duncan blackouts im a huge emg fan but the blackouts destroy the emgs they are sooooo fuckin sweet great for clean sooo damn tight for your metal chugging and for leads they just scream in the most beautiful way ever go for them instead of emgs
