Re: Holy Grail!!!!!

Well, it IS rare (never seen one in cherry, and with a gold TRC), but definately not "$15K" rare. And, definitely NOT a "Holy Grail"!

They're not bad guitars, though.

Re: Holy Grail!!!!!

Giving the devil it's due, Gibson proclaimed it as "All That" when it came out.

Re: Holy Grail!!!!!

Not sure how I feel about the stained finish. The maple used was from Austria - a beautiful fiddleback curl. I think it kind of screws it up to have it in any finish other than natural. Then again, maybe there's something screwy with the curl on this one to begin with and they stained it to cover it up - hence, the "second" designation. I love the wood bits & pieces on these guitars. Also, the ebony-rosewood-ebony fretboard with the abalone inlays. Definitely one fancy-assed mofo. Maybe not Holy Grail, but an agnostic chalice, at the very least...

There's always been rumors floated that employees would mark ones that they fancied with the "second" designation so they could purchase them on the cheap. However, I doubt that in this case. There were scant few of these made (less than 100, about 75-80, iirc), and they were a top of the line, showcase model using very rare materials. With that and the asking price in mind, I'd say any that were not perfect in every way would have been tagged seconds. I'm still on the fence about the stain. If you haven't seen one in natural, you should look it up and then see how you feel.
