John, thanks for posting this. I've never used e-bay but have been lurking about and recently signed up. This is good to know. For whatever reason I thought the seller would pay shipping. Is it common to charge the buyer that. Sort of makes sense as you might not want the seller to skimp on some cheap packing, I guess. But does it always work that way? Also, is the $100.3 the paypal fee? Is that always just a fixed cost for stuff above $1,111.12?

I've been using eBay since 1998, and I've always passed the shipping charges onto the buyer: if they want it, they can pay to get it. Anyway, the formulas I came up with are simplifications. The actual fee equation for a Paypal transaction on eBay is: Fee = 2.9%(Gross + Shipping) + $.30.

Good website Mojo, but you have to determine PayPal and eBay fees on separate pages there. My formulas do both at the same time.

OK, hopefully this makes more sense. I worked up the Fixed Price formulas as well. All you do is plug in the Final Price and Shipping numbers and out poops what you actually put into your pocket because both eBay and PayPal fees are factored in. These are for the musical instruments catagory.

Auction Style Format
If FinalPrice ≤ $1,111.11 then (.881)FinalPrice - (.119)Shipping -.3 = InPocket
If FinalPrice ≥ $1,111.12 then (.971)FinalPrice - (.089)Shipping -100.3 = InPocket

Fixed Price Format
If FinalPrice = $0.99-$50 then (.861)FinalPrice - (.139)Shipping - .3 = InPocket
If FinalPrice = $50-$1,000 then (.911)FinalPrice - (.089)Shipping - 5.8 = InPocket
If FinalPrice ≥ $1,000.01 then (.951)FinalPrice - (.049)Shipping - 65.8 = InPocket

The fees have really been getting crazy in the last couple of years...
I really don't understand how they can rationally explain how they can charge seller fees on shipping charges... and then tell sellers to charge actual shipping costs to buyers...
Nonetheless, it's were you have to go if you want to sell I guess.

Their reasoning is to direct all sellers to offer free shipping. So, let's say I have a glass orb that sells for $5, but it takes me $40 to package, ship and insure it. I pay $35 to have someone take it off my hands. Ebay has always based fair shipping costs on the sale amount, not the size, weight and fragility of the item.

They cannot conceive that it may cost more to ship something than the winning bid price.

I only use Ebay as an advertising tool these days. And to occasionally sell CDs I no longer want.

Like they dont make enough, if we were to add free postage the cost would have to go up to cover postage costs and Ebay gets more as the 7% will be taken from the total of the marked price...greedy

eBay takes 11% up to $100 max fixed and 9% up to $100 for auctions and that includes shipping costs. PayPal is 2.9%+.30. eBay sucks

Sorry but... wrong, I just got direct response from their support, and here in Oz its as i stated above. Thats if you have an online store with them.

Edit. Then there is 20$ a month for the store fees

I am NOT WRONG. It is DIRECT FROM EBAY! You are talking about a store. You have to pay fees to be a store and meet some requirements. The avg eBay'er doesnt pay a monthly fee to be a store.

So, my equations above are for the average every once in a while eBayer in the USA. They don't work for eBay stores. Also, the fees could be a little different for you guys down under, with the currency exchange and whatnot.

I am talking about auctions. They take the same rate off your shipping charges as they do the item itself. Yes, they want to accomplish two things, to get everyone to have a store and to not have people charge separate shipping charges.

actually in australia the fees are capped at $49.95 "for the little guy" .unfortunately ebay decided to really ram me in the arse by being gracious enough to make me a "power seller" to which I didn't ask nor want and there is no 'opt out' of it so my fees went back up.
think i might need a sacrifice play & take a neg feedback for the discount.....
and there are changes that occur in other countries that don't happen in other countries.like when ebay aust tried to bring in paypal as the ONLY accepted method of payment.

when you use free shipping you are automatically given a 5.0 score for detailed rating in shipping as well.

Buyers rate you on detailed ratings. That is how you becone a power seller and a top rated seller.

As for who told me that. Ebay/

Im a top rated power seller, and still only get charged $20 per month for my store and 7.9% on final value plus 40cents for each listing. Not sure where you get some of these figures

A flat monthly rate would be fair though i think, they are still greedy bastards
