refinishing a Gibson SG Gothic

I recently bought a used Gibson SG Gothic with the intention of refinishing it. I want to go sea foam green with a white pick guard and nickel hardware. I have the guitars hardware stripped down. I have not yet started sanding. I plan on leaving the rear of the headstock black and doing a stinger so the picture of O.Gibson can stay. Is there any advice anyone could give me on the best way to start this project. I would also like to use a nitro finish if possible. Any thoughts on where to purchase paint for the guitar? I use to be a PPG certified automotive refinish tech and will be doing all the refinish work myself. I've just never refinished a guitar before and want to do it right.

Re: refinishing a Gibson SG Gothic

Hey 6pack, how's the refin project going. I'm about to start a similar project on my LP Gothic. I too was a pro auto refinisher back in the 70's. Small world.

I plan on using the heat gun approach to strip as I hate the chemical mess. There's a few links on the web if you Google "strip guitar heat gun".

My project will include all new hardware and electronics. (I've decided on all nickel) Pups will be swapped out with a set of WB Firewater's. Staying with black color.

Lot of work ahead of me but I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Ken
