Re: HCN Inlay install guided tour - R7 & R8 (PICS)
Would doing this just devalue your guitar? As it now isn't original. I can understand changing pickups and bridges as it can be reversed, but this is quite destructive to your guitar.

I guess if thats how you want to look at it. I see it as a MAJOR improvement. At worst it doesn't affect the value in the least, however, i'm sure it would at least add the value of what the inlays sell for to the selling price. Now if I would have routed them for a kahler trem, that's another story. Regardless, after you do this to your guitars, on your own, they become that much more a part of you. I'll never sell them. (and let's say I ever do, I'm quite sure this mod won't hurt the value in the least) just my 2c though. But, you raise a fair quesiton, I'm curious to hear what others think? |

I would think that if done correctly ! This could only increase the value of your Historic !!! I have my R8 at my local luthiers having my Historic Makeovers inlays done as we speak !

...actually it detracts from originality...so alot of people will consider it a negative...
there's already alot of crapslinging about HistoricMakeovers and what their value should be,so take it from there. |

I'm really impressed by the way the finger board on your goldtop has darkened.I have used Fret Doctor on mine and it doesn't make that much darker. Would you attribute the darkening to the fact that you sanded the board? Has it lightened any since the photos were taken?

Yes, definatly, sanding the board baby ass smooth has helped. And no, it hasn't lightened up yet, but it will eventualy a bit. Thats to be expected.

A picture of an inlay from a real 59 LP ... As you can see the celluloid has shrunk over the almost 50 years of it's life !! Makes you realize how spot on the celluliod Dave Johnson has is !!!

Re: HCN Inlay install guided tour - R7 & R8 (PICS)
So I went back to my inlays today and re-sanded the whole works. There were a few little things that bothered me. I didn't have the patience to go in and around every fret and sand them with 2000grit like I had wanted, just because I was right out of patience after doing the two guitars in one day. And It had bothered me since.
That, and there was a glue streak (it looked like dried soda or some sticky juice, anoying ) I had over looked which needed to be sanded away, so away I went. A couple things to note, as soon as I started shaving the inlays with a blade i could tell that they had already tanned up a bit, so thats cool, but now I'm back to square one, so, bitter sweet that find was. Here are some more pics, just cause these things look so damn good! I can't thank Kim and Dave at Historic Makeovers enough for sourcing these inlays for all of us. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here you can see my attempt at really perfecting each corner and fret end, trying to give them a real worn in feel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
