Here's my newly refinished les paul Bfg '08. I had my local luthier do it for me. The inlays are gold mop/ black mop v blocks. There is a natural binding and the p90 cover and switch ring have been changed to creme. I haven't changed the knobs or control cavity covers yet but let me know what you think. I threw in a picture of what it looked like right before i took it in.

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
Wow!
Looks great. Love your color choice. But, I would have done it to a solid color BFG instead of the Boullion Burst. That's just me though. Great job none the less!

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
i don't have any good pictures myself but go to this link and there are some better ones of the inlay. i decided to refinish the bullion after the finish started fading and it actually cost me just the same as the standard versions.

It's been awhile. time for an updated pic. New pickups, replaced with gibson mini bucker neck and gibson dirty fingers bridge. Working on moving the toggle switch and putting in another tone pot. |

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
IMAG0632.jpgNot much changed up top, just a new truss rod cover. Other than that I had to gut the Kill switch that was in a normal toggle position and change pickups b/c I was getting loads of hum and feedback. The original pickups were a non wax potted burstbucker 3 and a p90 which hums anyway and a poorly wired killswitch. all of which caused major noise problems. Hence the open toggle hole at the top until I get the parts in to fix it.

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
Not all BFGs had flame tops, some were carved plain tops. My own was flamed in spots and the top wasn't matched (didn't need to be with the carve)

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
not to my understanding, there have been plenty of refinishes where there is no flame. The original texture was a rough cut top for texture that was painted. The tops are not matched or select wood , so its kinda fun to see what you get once its sanded down. Correct me if I'm wrong but that was what I found.

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
I thought the point was a barely finished guitar. It has the rough top carve but it's not sanded down, no binding, thin finish, no inlays. Why they decided to put a kill switch in I have no idea, that's easily fixed if you think it's wrong (like I do). I bought this one with the intent of refinishing the top, and while it didn't come out exactly as I'd expected, it did come out as nice as I'd like it to have. I'm still jacking with it; I put a custom truss rod cover on that reads Webtroll and swapped the BB3 with a Jerry Sentell humbucker. The HB is too bright, so I ordered an A5 to swap out with it and invert the pickups (the Sentell is out of phase with the P90 and crazy bright).

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
WebTroll...did you run into any problems with the toggle being longshaft going into the killswitch/standard posisiton? I haven't really made it there yet as I haven't got the parts yet. Blew all my money on new p/u's I wasn't really happy with stock. Did you have to use a washer to make it fit on either end b/c I noticed the route seemed bigger on one end? Thanks!

Re: Refinished les paul BFG
It's bigger and I got a washer, but it wasn't too big and I didn't need it. Smaller pots could be different, but I used Gibson pots so they'd look right through the backplate.
