Is it Stock?

I just got my first LP. It is a 1999 Standard. I've never dug around in one of these so I'm not sure what I have. Does it look stock? The pots are I'm pretty sure because they say "Gibson" on them but I don't know what the capacitors are. Take a look if you will and point out things, if there are any, that I might want to replace or repair.

Re: Is it Stock?

Yes it's all stock. You might want to change the disc caps to orange drops for better mid/low tones from them pups.

Re: Is it Stock?

+1 on getting rid of the little discy things, next to useless - orange drops or vit q's are the way to go. Also worth looking through the wiring library 60's style (the position the caps connect to the pots) is recommended...

Re: Is it Stock?

I just looked at OD's and the site I looked at had 9 with each having a different mfd rating. What would be the right one to go with or should I just get one of each and alligator clip them in to try each one out? I hate to waste 'em.

Re: Is it Stock?

What are they...I think it's .22uf 400v -- correct me if I'm wrong.

ODs are liked here, as are Vitamin Qs, Luxe, even Hovland Musicaps. I think a majority would favor the Vitamin Q over the OD, just from reading the forums a lot lately.

I have Luxe Bumblebees in mine--it's a Russian PIO cap. I like 'em. There are a lot of different options. All you can do is try a couple and see what you think.

Yeah the ones they show are all 200v and the mfd values are:
.001
.003 common value for Jaguar tone circuit
.01 common value for Jaguar guitars
.015
.022
.033
.047
.068
.1

The Jaguar comments are not mine, they are in the site's description.

Re: Is it Stock?

200v would still work...heck the guitar is putting out millivolts.

I have heard of guys putting a .22uf on the bridge, and a .15uf on the neck. Never tried it myself.

Re: Is it Stock?

no it's not a .22, it's a .022, or a .015

those zeros are kinda important.

and from what I've read about ODs, use 715s or 716s, not 225s (series number)

there are lots of different brands of caps you can try, most anything is going to be an upgrade from the ceramics IMO

Re: Is it Stock?

Hello guys
And about that metal plate? What is it for? It can be removed? Tomorrow I'll receive my '98 Standard, and maybe she has it too.

Re: Is it Stock?

One other thing, it hums until I touch the bridge or strings. Does the solder on the pot at the bottom left look ok. It looks pretty sloppy and wonder if that may be causing it.
