Dry Fretboard

I have an SG faded that has a very dry fretboard. At my dealer's suggestion,
I have treated it with synthetic fretboard oil, but it still seems to be dry.

Any suggestions?

Currently I am using Alisyn Fingerboard Oil, but it doesn't seem to lubricate the wood.

Johnson's baby oil. Works better than anything else I've tried.

Re: Dry Fretboard

I've always used pure lemon oil, a little goes a long way, just be sure to give it ample time to soak it up and remove the excess.

Like Iceman said, "pure" lemon oil.

There are solvents in most store bought lemon oil that will cause your inlays and frets to come loose. If you decide to use it, make sure its "pure".

Iceman, if you ever get the chance, check out the bore oil. It's the exact same thing as Fret Doctor. It also has a nice darkening effect.

Re: Dry Fretboard

If you supersoak the board with any oil, and it takes it, it will swell due to that and dislocate anything put into it. Pure lemon oil if used properly will make crap assed "rosewood" lokk awfully close to ebony.

Re: Dry Fretboard

I cannot stress enough how much I love Fret Doctor. This stuff is like magic and anyone that has used it seems to feel similarly. You REALLY should try it. Does not gunk up the board either like some other oils... One bottle is cheap and will last a LONG, LONG time!

Great stuff. I haven't seen it mentioned much here, but quite a bit in other forums.

Re: Dry Fretboard

Very old school, and the best is Boiled Linseed Oil Much cheaper than those other name brand stuff, and actually the same ingredients.

Re: Dry Fretboard

Upon further investigation, you are right. There probably is not much if any Linseed Oil in Bore oil nor fret oil. But Linseed oil has been used for many many years without fail. Why change? It's all I've ever used.

Re: Dry Fretboard

There seems to be Mineral Oil among other things in Fret Oil. Linseed Oil is used on fine Furniture. My opinion is that, if it's used on quality furniture, it should be good for the Fretboard on your guitar. Probably cheaper then Fret oil too. This is just my opinion. I got this from an old Luthier.

Interesting! Your opinion, or do you have facts for us?
How long have you been using any of these products?

Re: Dry Fretboard

I found an exceptionally talented repairman locally. He uses lard, and told me to rub some onto the fretboard with a clean cloth each time I change the strings. I've been doing that for almost a year now and it works great.

Uhmmm... Honestly, I would not do it. Lard, like olive oil, becomes rancid after a while and it might smell funny eventually.

I appreciate the caution 5F6-A.

The fellow providing the advice is in his 50's and has been at this for a long time. To me he was a very credible source. However, I would be interested in hearing from anyone with direct experience to confirm and/or caution my use of lard.

Terry.

glad to help.... fret doctor is what I've used with good results so far. Interesting to see if anybody else has used lard.

I heard this is great! However, can i use it after using other stuff on my boards? Do I have to clean them first?

What about getting other substances on my board? I use Chapins guitar polish to clean my strings - a tip from Dean at Snake Oil Strings and it is magic but some gets on the fretboard. Will that cause problems with the Fret Doctor? I want some!

I talked to the owner of this company a while back and he is extremely knowledgeable. He said there really is nothing better than the fret doctor product but I'll check again. I'll also look into the

How does that Honey oil compare?

Anyone use Dr. Duck's Axe Wax? I have that now.

Good stuff guys....
