Re: Heel reductions?
I used to own an SE. A "heel reduction," whatever the hell that is, is about the most jackassed thing I've ever heard of.

Re: Heel reductions?
Here comes the big question...
Have you owned a PRS? (No) Since you haven't, what makes you think that you need your "heel reduced?" Maybe its the beer, but this sounds ridiculous...

Re: Heel reductions?
No, he's right. Paul Reed Smith doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. Ed Roman could teach Mr. Smith a thing or two.
![]() Come on - don't believe the things that you read. And don't believe ANYTHING that Ed Roman has to say...

Re: Heel reductions?
You know, I'm probably the last person to say this, but I will anyway. Whatever happened to just playing the guitar for a while?

Re: Heel reductions?
People gotta have it modified before it even arrives from UPS. I'm with ya, DJ. Play, then modify to taste. Don't read about what is "wrong" with it, then "do what you are told."
If PRS thought that the damned guitar needed the heel removed, he'd do it. It isn't like he doesn't know what he's doing, and just slapped that bastard on there so that it'll be in the way. I can't recall even noticing a heel on my PRS SE as having any effect on playability. Then again, we're on a Les Paul forum - they have the least accessible upper fret access of any guitar known to man - maybe that is why I don't notice it on a PRS. Point being, Ed Roman is a douche. That is all.

Quote:
2. Heel reduction. I think I've ranted on that enough already. 3. "Perferly?" WTF are you talking about? 4. The PRS SE guitars play great, and they SOUND great as well. Upper fret access is fantastic. And, try the pickups before you condemn them and go with EMGs. I've had a lot of guitars, and the PRS SE that I used to own had some of the nicest sounding stock pickups I've ever come across.

Re: Heel reductions?
Thanks, River. I drink about once a month. It just so happens that I come up with my "best stuff" when I'm about 6 beers in!

Re: Heel reductions?
Seriously, dude - get the guitar, play it, enjoy it. The heel doesn't need removed. I sold mine for $350 with a hard case. I wish you would have been in the market about 8 months ago when I parted with it.

Re: Heel reductions?
Yeah, I've played a few and the wide neck is more the problem for me than the heel. Ed Roman just makes money off of convincing people their guitars need fixed when they aren't broken.

Re: Heel reductions?
It's clear to me looking at that picture that the heel is there for strength. I played a '61 SG recently - thing was awesome but
a) the neck had been repaired,Ed Roman's got a lot of nerve second-guessing PRS on reinforcement when he practically makes a living making fun of Gibons's lack thereof.

Re: Heel reductions?
At the same area on the neck of a LP it is just as thick or even thicker. Do you own a Les Paul and have you modded that yet?
Check the thickness on your LP at the 16th fret, then compare it to your PRS. At the 18th fret on the PRS it becomes very thick. At the 17th fret on the LP it becomes very thick. Looks like the PRS is more playable in the upper registers. |

Re: Heel reductions?
I know that, but i did try the se, and i did find the heel area uncomfatable....and really, i dont think its goign to hurt the SE to reduce the heel.... its not like im going to shave the back of it like a neck thru guitar... its th eactual join that holds the guitar, not the heel...

Re: Heel reductions?
Again, Paul Reed Smith knows a thing or two about guitar construction.
He didn't just put it there to be in your way. It has a purpose. And, Ed Roman is a douche.
