Looking for some aged Goldtop pictures...

Hey guys,

I was looking at my Epiphone, in all it's splendour With all the aged hardware, metal and plastic. And thought the finish could do with a bit of ruffing up, it's looking a bit shiny, even after I sanded off that awful Polyurethane finish.

What I'm really looking for are pictures, of aged Goldtops, or even any aged guitar. Where you guys think it looks vintage and 'authentic'. This could be artificially aged, or straight from the '50's.

I just want some pictures as a guide.

And maybe even some comments, on what to use or where to sand down etc.

Cheers guys,

Luke.

Re: Looking for some aged Goldtop pictures...

That's precisely the sort of thing I was looking for, cheers dude!

Can I ask, if that's artificially aged? Or a proper vintage guitar?

Any advice?

Luke.

It's been refinished and aged by Dave Johnson at Historic Makeovers.

Re: Looking for some aged Goldtop pictures...

I'd advise against trying to do this sort of relic on an Epiphone (without first doing a refin). The Poly finish will not lend itself to this type of aging. I've seen ONE Epi on this forum which looked pretty good - all of the rest of the poly finish relics have looked terrible.

+1, Poly just won't weather check, and IMO that's what looks so good on a relic GT.

nuance97, your guitar is sick! I really like it.
Personnally I prefer a relic GT that's just a step less beaten up, but to be honest, if I could find one like that, I wouldn't think twice...

I've been considering getting a R6 GT lately and doing the relic job myself (mainly weather checking and hardware), but I still have to figure out what years of production would be best for this...

Okay, I'll just leave the finish then to itself.

I'd go for an R6 made before 2000. Apparently they use a different type of nitro after 2000 that doesn't lend itself very well to checking.

Good luck dude!

The nitro mix changed sometime in 05.
