Best Refin Dudes?

I have a flametop Tokai Paul I'm considering a top-only refinish on. It has kind of a muddy orange thing going on and I'm just not lovin' it. I'm going to be relatively particular about the coloration of the burst...so who are the top guys out there for this kind of work? (besides Murphy and Dave Johnson...those guys are out of my price range) Champagne on a beer budget best describes my situation.

The guitar has a nitro finish now so I'd prefer that over poly, but I might open up to the idea of poly.

Where are you at? Better to find someone local.

Shipping is going to add more money to the price.

Hey Roman,

I don't think local guys can shoot nitro. I'm in California (Los Angeles). I think it's against the law.

RS Guitarworks can do it, but you'll have to call Roy and talk money.

Correct. Apparently some local luthiers gave me some incorrect information.

Re: Best Refin Dudes?

I think you have to have specialized equipment to use nitro in CA.

You can't just paint in an open shop. CA has some tough enviro laws, and the booth has to be made to their spec.

Other luthiers in CA do it as well; you should be able to find someone local.

Have you asked Dave for a quote? If he truely is out of the picture, get ahold of Pat Wilkins and ask him who he recommends for nitro work in So Cal. I think Pat still just shoots poly, but I may be wrong.
