Re: pot change
The size of the pot isn't the real issue, I think. EMG pickups come with the small pots, but they are of the 25K variety, not used with standard pickups.
I've upgraded some less expensive guitars for friends, and it never fails--cheap small pots and Strat/Tele style switches with dang circuit boards on 'em. If it sounds good to you now, then don't change anything. If you've compared your guitar to another and want to change, it's a good start. I would upgrade to full-size CTS pots; I go to RS Guitarworks and use their Superpots on my LP guitars. For single-coil pickups 250K seems to be the standard. I would also consider upgrading the capacitors (called "caps") as well. That is a whole different question, but if you search there are several active threads about caps/pots on the forum. BB

Re: pot change
If the pots are actually 500K (they can vary a LOT) they are probably ok. If the values are off, changing to better pots/caps will make a big difference.
The factory is making guitars for a profit; just keep that in mind. The aren't going to use the best parts they can buy. If the guitar is new, play it for awhile before starting mods. Once you decide to change stuff, like the pots/caps, make the change, then evaluate. You may decide to change the pickups as well. So, to answer your question...yes. ![]() BB

Re: pot change
correction they are 14mm. so i guess my question is even hogh they are both 500k will the sound differ because of the size (dime vs. quarter) like it does between 500k and 250k?

Re: pot change
I think you need to switch types of Pot every few weeks, otherwise it gets boring.
OH - you mean potentiometers... My bad! LOL Personally I always change out the stock 300K Gibson pots for MATCHED CTS 500k pots, I find it really opens up the guitar. Some like it darker, and they prefer the stock 300k dudes. I usually change out the pups to some fairly low DCV handwounds, usually around 9k bridge and 7k neck. 500k pots really let these types of pickups 'sing'. Hell, give it a try, see what you think. You can always change 'em back! That's the beauty of modding - you can keep on doing it till you find what you like! R |
