as far as RS pots being crap, he has his head WAY up his ass. You aren't going to buy better quality anywhere. He's trying to use that as an excuse for breaking one of your pots.

I'd still make them pay for the RS pot - you'll probably have to order it yourself though - and repair it for free.

Re: got my caps and pots back from the tech

What a nightmare...I feel for ya, bro.

I replaced my pickups in my '76 LP Custom with EMGs years ago--my first experience. It was pretty easy getting the plate on/off...I don't know what the fuss is about.. To get the speed knobs on I took a pair of pliers and GENTLY squeezed the fingers together. On one of them I got the fingers too close (loose knob) so I gently pushed a screwdriver blade between them to open it back up a bit...perfect. (It's now back stock, btw...I got past my Zakk Wylde phase. )

On the guitar I just finished I had to lower the pot; I used 2 nuts to "lock" the distance, then put a washer between the guitar body and the 2 nuts. (That sounds weird.. ) Worked like a charm.

I'd cut my losses with this guy, and tell everyone not to use him for guitar work.

Call RS, get yer stuff.

Yea GC said they would give me like a $30 gift certificate to cover the $10 pot plus $8 shipping, and the fix of everything is free. If he screws up again though, i'm done with him i'm just gonna cut my losses and try out south jersey repair. I think I would then be better off with a specialized local luthier.
In regards to what he said about the rs pots i was surprised. I was explaining to him how the shaft is made of brass as opposed to aluminum, and he tried telling me it wasn't. I was like man it really is, and he didn't have much to say. He seemed pissed that I bought the same pots again, but anyway it's all payed for so cross ur fingers for me.
I should have it back by monday.

Hey don,
Wasn't really in one ear and out the other. I thought I'd be playing it safe by going to a guitar tech, but obviously an electronics repair guy would have done a much better job.

I would NEVER take my guitar back to a guy who screwed it up that bad the first time, take the pots , the certificate and walk somewhere else? Why give a guy a second chance to screw the same job he botched the first time?

Re: got my caps and pots back from the tech

Quick question guys, the tech states that he can't use the insulation that hg sent with my bee's-since the space is too tight in the cavity to get it to work or something. Does insulation make a difference?

Re: got my caps and pots back from the tech

Insulation...you mean on the cap wires? Show the dude the pic of my R9's cavity...it's the same spacing as in yours, even with the plate.

This guy isn't willing to take a few minutes and do a little trim work to make it fit. Another compromise...I'm telling ya...just have him button it up as is, and take the whole thing to Weldaar's house and let him do it for ya--take him a six-pack of his fave beverage, be it brewed or soda pop. Tell your tech you WANT the insulation on the caps.

That's what I'd do if I couldn't do it myself.

Sorry dude--there was a similar post from a dude with the same problem more or less...

Ya, I'd go to another tech. Where do you live? One of our gurus might be right down the road from ya.

Inxs, I've been doing my own setups and repairs for years, I quite agree, if you're gonna play, do yourself a favor and learn how to repair.......

Re: got my caps and pots back from the tech

talked to the tech today.
I called to tell him that I want the insulation and to make sure we're on the same page with everything when I drop off my guitar tomorrow night (he won't be there). In regards to the insulation he was saying how its kinda tight fit, but he'll try to do it. He was also telling me how he owned two original 50's lp's and they never had em or something. Anyway I played nice with him on the phone-so he'd do a good job. I'll let you guys know monday night how it all turned out. Keep ur fingers crossed for me all, and thx for the support so far-really pushed to making sure I get what I should have orginally.

JP,
The " Spaghetti "( Insulation ) is 50's Cloth.
The guy is full of shit ! As it's made of cloth it can collapse.
He can hold it back from the soldering point with an alligator
clip, which would be a good idea anyway. The clip will act
as a heat sink to protect the cap from over heating.

Boy this " wanna be tech " is a HACK !
50's LP's had Spaghetti . Period !

Hey HG,
I'm gonna give him that alligator clip tip, hopefully he'll listen. 61 If he screws up again, i'm done regardless. I'll drive to nashville to have gibson install it at that point.

Sometimes you just need a real experienced hand working on your axes. I use Ken, he is a warm knowledgeable guy who knows his stuff.

In the northeast, if you can give Kenny Nash a call in New London. He is a real PRO! Great setups, neck resets on Martins, repaints, builds 'em the works. I have used him for over fifteen years and love the results
He and my R4 and R9 will be seeing each other soon.
