Re: Redwood?

I've tried it. It was impossible to carve, and is really dangerous for your lungs, so I abandoned the project.

Re: Redwood?

My experience with it has been that it is quite warm.
I have never done a mahogany with a redwood top before, although I am pretty certain that the characteristics of the mahogany will prevail.

I used to do some stuff that was Maple sandwiched between the redwood burl.

The redwood lace burl was beautiful stuff and mellowed out the maple a bit.

Redwood was impossible to carve as in not dense enough. I would imagine it takes some tricks to finish it well too.

Cocobolo can prompt allergic reactions, but redwood is a major carcinogen. I use a mask with both. Speaking of cocobolo though, I just got a board this morning that is almost black, and enough for about 8 fingerboards, all for $24

Re: Redwood?

Buyer's Guides: Electric guitar tonewoods 1 - Body Woods from Paul Bothner

Redwood is a hard, dense pinkish wood which is sometimes used for laminated tops. It has a tone similar to maple, but slightly warmer and more resonant. It sometimes shows dramatic figuring.

From Dream guitars

Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirons)
Slightly darker and more red in color than Western Red Cedar. Redwood lends a very similar sound when compared to Cedar. It does, however, have slightly more punch and ability to handle harder strumming than Cedar

here is some info I found....

Re: Redwood?

PRS made some beautiful figured Redwood tops. Sounded warmer than maple, but still full range.

OOHHH, You went to Dream Guitars!
I get stuck there for long periods of time. It is very bad for me to go there.
I go there than run to my friend's acoustic store and get in real trouble.
High end acoustics make my world go round, that's for sure.
