Is that a bad idea?

Re: Floyd Rose on a Les Paul?

Not if you want it.
Even Roman's making one, and gibson have their axcess.
I'd say it looks quite good.

Only thing is that you should like Floyds if you want to have it.

Did someone say "Floyd?"

I wouldn't question your 'axxessment' of the Axxess, as you obviously have played one.

It would be the same thing on an Epiphone, except that I don't know that they make one already installed on an Epiphone. If not, that would involve routing the top of the guitar *and* the back of the guitar. Depending on the neck angle of the Epiphone (or a standard Les Paul, for that matter), you *could* end up with a Floyd that sits way too high on the guitar and the case might not close.

While it isn't *necessarily* so, there seems to be an assumption that someone playing a guitar with a Floyd on it is more likely to use the upper frets. All three of the guitars in my photos have modified neck heels/body joins to permit more comfort in that regard. The Axcess and the CSB Agile both have smooth, cut-down neck heels:

And the AL2000 has a neck heel cut on a diagonal. That, and the neck is pushed *up* on the guitar (making the guitar longer) so that the 24th fret is at about the same spot vis a vis the bottom of the cutaway that the 22nd fret would normally be:

The black Gibson in the photos above IS an Axcess; it's just a custom build from the Gibson Custom Shop.

Yeah, I know, all Axcess guitars have a CS or "Custom Shop" serial number prefix, but the standard production models have rosewood fretboards, plastic inlays and no inlay around the headstock. In addition, the standard colors are iced tea and gunmetal grey. Gibson has produced a few in a translucent red and a translucent green, but it's believed that those are not production guitars -- just trial balloons from the custom shop. To get one in black with an ebony FB, MOP inlays, binding at the headstock, gold (or black) hardware, etc., you have to place a Custom Shop order and have it built.

So that one is a Custom Shop Custom Shop Axcess Custom <G>. Or something like that.

You didn't recess yours -- I take it the neck angle won't allow that? Ever measure how high the fine tuners are above the face of the guitar -- I'd really be curious...?

How much does your case compress the Floyd when you close it? Yours is an epi, but I've seen a Gibby with a floyd mounted high eat nearly through the top of the case...

Yeah the neck angle won't allow a recess but it isn't necessary anyway.
I haven't measured but the Floyd is not that high off the body. The guitar is very comfy to play.
As far as the case, I pulled the lining back enough to remove a bit of padding right where the Floyd is and it fits fine.
I'm considering buying an LP Axcess next year but I want to A/B it with this guitar first. I know it's "only an Epi" but it plays and sounds remakable.
Other mods to it are CTS and Switchcraft electronics and Tonerider Generator pups. I also dulled the poly finish and refinished the top with Tru Oil.
The Floyd on it is a Gotoh BTW.

My CSB Agile (in the photos above) has already acquired the nick "CK" (for cheap knockoff). Nothing wrong with an Epi in my book. The LP Axcess has an appropriate neck angle for a recessed floyd, of course, but probably the most notable thing you'll find is the increased comfort of playing in the higher fret area. There's also a tummy cut (but I think some Epis have those) and the body weight is significantly reduced. All in all a more comfortable guitar.

I've found that the Agile's "blunted" horn actually gives me better upper fret access than does the pointier horn of the Gibson; I've often run into the inside of the horn with the side of my hand. Not so with the Agile.

Both the Agile and the Gibson are undergoing about $1500 worth of mods each at the moment. Virtually all the electronics on both machines are coming out (not because they're not good, it's just that this is a specific project) and new things are going in.

I like the look of Tru-Oil and Tung Oil finishes, but I'll never put them on the bodies of another guitar that will be used frequently. I've got two guitars with bodies finished in those materials, and if you play them a lot, they just absorb and retain dirt and stains. Both are approaching 20 years old and have been played, and both look shabby (and not in a cool mojo kind of way) and will require some serious sanding and refinishing (in poly this time). Meanwhile, their siblings with the poly finishes (same age, same history) are still looking good. Both guitars are solid koa, and it's a shame that they were oil finished in the first place.

Interesting thing about Floyds -- OFRs for OEM at large manufacturers are manufactured in Korea. Have been for two years. ONLY OFRS destined for the aftermarket or for tiny boutique builders are still made in Germany (by Schaller?). The licensed Floyd on the cherry sunburst Agile, it turns out, was built on the same assembly line as the OFRs, with the only difference being the identity stamping. We inspected it pretty carefully against an OFR and even the machiining marks are identical. IOW, exactly the same as the black one on the Gibson. The LFR on the black Agile pictured, however, was done somewhere else (to be expected; this is a $289 guitar). But since it's dimensionally identical to the OFR, I'll be able to replace it, when the time comes, with the German OFR.
