What have I done....

Today, I was finishing up the sanding on my LP.

And Last thing to sand was the back of the head stock.

I was thinking to myself that the serial number is imprinted in the wood, so if I sand over it, it will still be there.

I used a very fine grit (I don't recall the #)

And it sanded away the serial number!!!

Now I have a guitar with no trace of a Serial # on it.

But right before I did all of this, I took a picture of the serial #.

What have I done...

Re: What have I done....

You must have sanded the ish out of that! I know a guy that shaves the necks on all of his Les Pauls, including the headstock, and all of his serial numbers are fine.

Edit: The serial number on my epi is silk screened. Mines an MIK though, are MIC serial numbers pressed in?

I don't know.
Mines MIK. And It's didn't feel like silk screen. I could feel the texture.

And I tried my hardest to go softly over the SN. It's like it was imprinted into the finish. (and not the wood.)

Re: What have I done....

You are sanding your guitar.. who cares about a serial number. Same with the name on it.. It doesn't matter. The guitar is what matters.

Re: What have I done....

You have sanded the serial number off your guitar. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well honestly it's an Epi so no worries, it's not like you sanded the serial number off of a late 50's standard. If the serial number began with an I0 it's just a gold silk screen on top of the finish. While it does have a "texture" any sanding will destroy it rather quickly.

Re: What have I done....

Actually, it's gonna sound quite a bit different.
Especially on the upper frets.

Find a machinist with a set of dies and stamp the number into
the headstock.

Re: What have I done....

You can always use some sort of decal or dry transfer numbers/letters from an art store to put the number back on right before you refinish it. As long as you have a photo of the original number, you can copy it.

Re: What have I done....

Don't sweat it. It's not like you ruined a $2000 guitar. Just take a paint pen and write in the serial number and shoot clear over it. Jeeeez, I thought you'd trashed and old Norlin or something.

Re: What have I done....

No big deal -- serial numbers can go back on the same way they did at the factory. Ask someone like Stewmac (Stewart-MacDonald: Everything for building and repairing stringed instruments!) the best way to get one back on for your model.
