Stop Tail Height?

What determines the correct height for the stop tail piece?

All the gibsons that I have purchased have had the stop tail pieces adjusted to some arbitrary height and I can't seem to find any information on what constitutes that adjustment?

Thanks
Dan

Re: Stop Tail Height?

Low enough that the strings sit firmly on the saddles and high enough that the strings aren't catching on the back of the bridge.

I'm having trouble with the high E string touching the back of the bridge on both my Lesters, it's really pissing me off

Looks like I might have to start top wrapping both guitars to rectify the situation. All the other strings are fine bar the high E. DAMN IT!

Re: Stop Tail Height?

they are adjustable for a reason. String tension and you might be able to find a tonal 'sweet spot'.

I don't think it's absolutely crucial... you know, as long as there's not enough of a bend to make your strings eventually break in that spot or possibly make it go out of tune more often.

almost same here. My tail piece must be set very high for the low e-string not to touch the back of the bridge
