BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

I figure my title is probably catching peoples eye on thinking im going to build a nut myself, I am, but i was wondering if anyone has tried it before, or if its possible, im trying to restore the missing nut on my B.C Rich Warlock, and have no clue how i could make one, does anyone know the dimensions of a nut? Im guessing BCRGREG, Roman, Or Nick knows alot about this sort of stuff.

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

I will wait with you. I'm contemplating making a new nut for my telecaster. I cut some oversize blanks from deer horns and am trying to figger out how to start. I assume that a lot of it is just eyeballing it and taking slow.

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

I do my own custom bone nuts. I take blank bone pieces and I cut, shape, file each one by hand.
I charge about $50.00.

I have been doing this a long time. Looking back, I am sure the first few ones I did were not real good.
I also do graphite nuts as well.

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

I get the blanks from stew mac. I then cut them to fit with sand paper and files. If you have the old nut, you can just shape it to match. If you dont have the nut, you can just shape/fit until you get it where you want it.

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

This is the most important tool I use for doing nuts. Without one of these, it would be a real pain to get the spacing right.

I agree, but I found this little write-up on how to make your own rule: FRETS.COM

You don't actually build the nut, you "shape" it from a solid block of over size bone. Every nut that I make is unique.

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

I just finished shaping and polishing and ivory nut on my custom Martin last night. Had to do something about that tusq one that was on there. It just didn't look right on this guitar!

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

Look, I mean this with respect. Trust me that I do not want to start a conflict, but I need to say that the use of ivory (at this point in time) is NOT COOL. Please think about the consquences.

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

I don't think its a big deal if it's pre-ban ivory.

I agree. I just wanted to make sure that people understand. There has to be some ivory floating around that is pre-ban but, please make sure.

Peace

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

I just ordered a blank from these guys. $15 with $6 shipping for a pre-ban elephant ivory nut. I thought that was reasonable. They also claim to be certified that their ivory is really pre-ban-I have no idea the process behind this. Anyway Enjoy

Re: BUILDING a nut, odd, but yes!

get yourself a micrometer for measuring...I replace a lot of Gibson nuts and all the slots and widths are a little different...
