Using Fret Doctor?

Hi Im new in here sorry for the nub question...

I bought a Gibson LP Standard 2006 and the neck is a bit dry
Ive ordered Fret Doctor but I dont know how to apply it on my fretboard
Which kind of cloth should I use?
Should I take the strings off and then apply it?
How much of the fret doctor should I use on the cloth?

Re: Using Fret Doctor?

I use Fret Doctor when I'm changing strings when my board is looking dry. That means there are no strings on my LP. A use a small dab (a little goes a long way) of Fret Doctor on a cotton cloth and rub it on the board between each fret. When I get to the last fret, I go back with a dry part of the towel to pick up an excess oil. The trick is to not use too much oil or leave it on too long.

Re: Using Fret Doctor?

i actually started using a cloth buy ended up taking ed (the maker's) advice and dabbed my finger and spread it. It goes on great with this method. I would also let it soak in for like 20-30 min and put at least 2 coats down. I put 3. It's completely natural and non-toxic (I was told it's mostly vegetable oils) so I didn't worry about getting it on your skin. I would take off the strings as well.

here's a link to a thread i started with before and after pics if ur interested

Re: Using Fret Doctor?

I use my finger, and a little does go a long way.
I leave it on for a good while then wipe off the excess.

People use steel wool to strip the wax that you may have applied to your fretboard. If your the original owner of your guitar and you have never polished or waxed your fretboard then it is not necessary. The wax would prevent the bore oil from soaking in. Also if you had gotten a full setup done on your guitar and they waxed the fretboard, then you may have to use steel wool. I am not familiar with the process of using the steel wool, but there are tips online, and I know that you should cover your humbuckers since they are magnetic and will get covered with the stuff. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Re: Using Fret Doctor?

I use Fret Doctor twice a year, at the beginning of summer and the beginning of winter. When I apply it, I put it on heavy enough to where the top of the fretboard looks like wet pavement. I let it soak in for 15-20 minutes at room temperature (not out in the garage/shop) and then wipe off the excess. This stuff is the best.

Re: Using Fret Doctor?

Hey-It's nice to see folks discovering fret doctor. I have been using it for about a year and I'm a believer. The guy who makes this stuff was formerly Director of Biology and Physiology at a major optics company (Carl Zeiss?)
He has electron microscopy photos of his product penetrating wood vs. other products. It's nice to see a product based on scientific research rather than something made in some guys garage and called Gorilla Snot or whatever. What this stuff does for wood is amazing. I actually use it around the house for other wood objects to bring out the grain and natural beauty of the wood. It has such good spreadability that a small bottle will last you years. This is a really special product, and the guy who created it deserves to do well, although he is a really humble guy who invented the product as a bore oil for woodwind instruments. Your beautiful photos really tell the story. Check out his website forgood scientific explanations why you shouldn't use lemon oil on a fretboard. Because he is a PhD in physiology, he knows wood better than most people and I trust his judgement.
