Ok, first of all, I'm new here, so I'm not sure how all of this forum stuff works yet, but whatever. I have a problem. I am a freshman in high school (wait it gets worse =]) and can't decide whether to buy a (Gibson) les Paul studio at Christmastime this year, or to save up for a few years and buy a Gibson les Paul Custom ('68 reissue in antique natural or triburst, to be exact). Could I get some advice/info on which would be the wiser choice and what the major differences are? Thanks. =]

Re: Studio vs Custom?
Depends, do you already play guitar or are you just starting out? If you're experienced, I'd say: save up and buy your dream guitar. Hell, if you wait a bit longer you could buy a R8 or an R9.
Grtz, Mesa.

Re: Studio vs Custom?
You could buy a used studio, and then sell it later for the same price and buy a custom with the money you saved up while playing the studio.

Re: Studio vs Custom?
buy the used studio and enjoy it throughout your high school years... once high school graduation rolls around put together all the money folks send you, the money you can get from selling the studio, and any money youve saved up from now till then and get a put that towards a custom =) as far as differences there are a handfull to consider but to sum it up in a simple way i like to use analogys...
think of the studio as a this, ![]() think of the custom as this... ![]() they are both nice, ones just nicer lol...

Re: Studio vs Custom?
I asked myself the exact same question 12 years ago
. I went with a new Studio and have never needed anything else. If you're comfortable enough with guitars to pick out a good used one that would be the best option I think.

Re: Studio vs Custom?
dude sorry for busting your balls. i guess some folks don't get northeast humor . calling you a yuppy **** wasn't ment to be insulting .
i say get the custom! possibly something you will have your entire life . if you can afford it now get the best one you can afford before a mortgage payment takes priority over your guitar. |

Re: Studio vs Custom?
Wow, I didn't expect this much feedback. First off, I want to thank you guys for giving me this great advice. =)
I would like to be able to buy the studio and then sell it later, but I tend to get attached to guitars, so I'm not sure I'd be able to sell it. But I really like the idea, it would just be something I'd have to work on. And as for the R8 or R9, I planned on getting those later on, because I've been buying so many guitars recently, I've forgotten about a good amp, and as a result, I'm still playing through a Roland cube 20. But on the other hand I have an Ovation Acoustic, Epi Goth V (they don't make them anymore =]), and Fender Dlx Players Strat, so I can't complain. Again, I want to say thanks for your help on this. I'll keep you posted on what happens as it happens. Peace, -Pat |

Re: Studio vs Custom?
Depending on your cabbage supply, get the studio first to see how well you like playing a Gibson. The studio and custom have the same pickups in them. And the prices of Customs now a days are rediculous you would be saving forever. There is nothing wrong with a studio, they are great guitars.

Re: Studio vs Custom?
Actually, the Studio has a 490R and a 498T, and the customs (or at least the one I'm looking at) has '57 Classics. But not to be devils advocate here, though. =]
