Re: Is it possible to put whammy bar on my les paul studio?
You can put on a Floyd Rose or Kahler, but they will require lots of work/routing. Most people don't want to do this to a Gibson. Here is another option. I put one of these on a Gibson LP a few years ago, and I was surprised... it actually works pretty good and stays in tune. No modification to the guitar body is needed.
Les Trem Stop-Tailpiece Tremolos at Stewart-MacDonald Les Trem Stop-Tailpiece Tremolo The Les Trem is a high quality spring-tension tremolo for Les Paul® and other guitars with a Gibson style post-mounted stop tailpiece. The unit is easy to install in the guitar's tailpiece post bushings, without woodworking. The arm pivots the hinged rear string-mounting bar to sharpen or flatten the strings approximately one-half step. The Les Trem has a Bigsby-like feel and bending range, and requires 3-1/4" post spacing. It includes M8 metric and 5/16-24 mounting posts, plus hardware and instructions. The adjustable-length arm can be swung down out of the way when not in use. Note: The Les Trem is not designed to replace combination bridge/tailpieces such as our #0217 LP Junior bridge and #0198 Schaller bridge.

You might be able to have a good tech install a Bigsby on you Paul.

Re: Is it possible to put whammy bar on my les paul studio?
This was really not that hard to do.
I used the routing templates from Stewart McDonald, a plunge router, and a small drill press. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() BTW, it's a 12 year old Epi LP that I picked up om Ebay for under $270 w/case and SD 59's. |

Re: Is it possible to put whammy bar on my les paul studio?
If you can fine one with the plate the Washburn Wonderbar actually bolted up to a Les Paul without routing. Ace Frehley used a Wonderbar on his Les Paul's with Frehley's Comet. I can dig up a pic later if you would like. I'm in the process of putting one on an Epiphone Les Paul Studio at the moment. I'm just having a problem finding the the right bolts (metric) with the right size head.

Re: Is it possible to put whammy bar on my les paul studio?
I finally had the time to put the Wonderbar on my Epi LP Studio. It looks huge but does the job and I can always take it off and put the guitar back to normal and you would never know the Wonderbar was ever on it. No routing or drilling, with the plate under it you just bolt it all together.

Re: Is it possible to put whammy bar on my les paul studio?
I put a Stetsbar Black Max on my Epi. It is OK at holding the tune, better than Strat bridge but not as good as a Floyd Rose. Since I have installed the Stetsbar I have noticed the sustain of my guitar has taken a serious nosedive. I can't even get the sustain to remain for longer than about 1 beat in any fret above the 12th fret. Bends above the 12th fret have also lost their tone. I wouldn't recommend getting a Stetsbar, I regret laying out the unjustifiable amount of cash. On a positive note, The owner/operator of the company is very accommodating and helpful, I just wished this product was more of what I was looking for.
Next string change, I am putting my TonePro's bridge and stop piece back on. WILLY |

Re: Is it possible to put whammy bar on my les paul studio?
I'm really sorry to drag this thread up from the dead, but i am trying to find out about adding a whammy bar to my Les Paul, but i have read these posts and i do like what Duster340 has done by adding a whammy bar without touching the guitar as in drilling bits etc, so i was wondering if i could have more info about this whammy bar that you have used Duster340, and i have researched wonderbar but i can't find anything which is liked to this.
Once again sorry for dragging this thread up. Regards, Richie. |
