That LP is awesome.

Thanks, Will. When the Rist gets here I may need some pups for it and this.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Don't go stealin' my thunder, Will!

I need some nice twangy pups for the Rist, so I'll probably want some nice ballsy pups for this guy... I really dig that P90 that in it... maybe a Hab or a Firewater...

Bah, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

it just made it fuller.... i know thats hot but, it is still smooth... what i used was a wolfetone fenris.... it made it sound like a solid body....... if you get one from will, i suggest the bb's or habaneros....

Finally finished my 3rd BFG. Not too sure I'm completely happy with it though?

Tell me what you all think & be brutally honest, I can take it.

I like it, honestly. Its got the finished feel but still has that earthy, grass roots look.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Unfortunately, all I can update with is that the guitar is awaiting a shipping container from Mike. Once the box arrives, it'll be packed up and sent off, hopefully a week or so later it will be making its way off to Last for prep, nitro, wiring, final assembly... and a couple of surprises.

It should be noted that I have sold all of the black hardware and disposed of the wiring.

I am also in the process of trading a B30 Bigsby and the BB3 for some other goodies.

We will see how she turns out soon!

Thanks! Mike was supposed to put the box in the mail today. It'll be shipped off next week for wood work.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

DJ, next time, rather than alcohol based dyes, use aniline dye. I use Alcohol dyes for building wood arrows and it can get splotchy. Aniline dye penetrates much more evenly. Just a little idea for your next project!!!

It is totally great so far.

Looking good so far DJ. I thought this thread had disappeared!

Since you're sending it to Last, is that to say you ditched the red dye?

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Nice job on the refin.

BFG's don't seem to hold up well--I've seen used ones in stores that look so beat up you'd think they were 20 or 30 years old.

Yeah, a lack of a finish takes its toll on the wood and the silkscreens.

I do have another VM on the way though so when mine is finished I'll be right behind it with another.

Here's how my BFG sits today. I've given it a hand rubbed TransAmber Burst (don't laugh too hard it's my 1st try doing a burst). I've got 6 coats of Nitro on her & now the waiting game begins as it cures.

I truly am happy for ya! Now aren't you glad you started?

Oh, meant to add that if you have no luck getting those dark streaks on the lower bout area you could try a really strong bleach solution on it. Good luck!
I think the way it looks right there is AMAZING>>>>KEEP IT LIKE THIS!!! great job

I think that was the idea behind the BFG look. It came with distressed hardware and scarred up wood straight from the factory.

I've been talking with Tex (here on the forums) & he has had great success with the Cherry Colored Nitro that Stewmac sells.

I'll probably use this on yours. I could attempt a burst using Tex's idea of shooting an amber belly then a translucent cherry nitro on the edges & teardrop pattern for your burst.

Something to chew on. Originally I was thinking of just shooting your top completely & evenly with the transcherry Nitro.

Up to you my friend.

In case it's of any help, I used the Stew-Mac amber and cherry on one of my octave guitars, and I thought that the cherry looked too bright by itself (your results may vary). But as a transition color to a darker color, it worked out great. If you haven't already seen this documented, check it out here, in post #56: Less Tall Octave Guitar!

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

While a trans cherry is very much still the plan if Last can do a burst, I'm really going to bug him for a darkburst as HCSB is not really my thing.
