It is looking good, Dave. You know something is up if I say that.

Now if only I could find you a building somewhere to do this so you would get it OUT of my LIVING ROOM!

Freakin' weather, man. Supposed to rain and storm tomorrow... so no dye going on. Unless the sun comes out and stays out, that is.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Just got some great news and some interesting developments!

I want to keep most of a secret, though some already get the idea, I just don't think you guys understand how awesome it'll be!

This is how I feel at the moment:

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

How bout a quick update?

This is how the top looked after the dye job:

Quite, fantastic if I do say so myself... only problem is it began to spot up on me... and it looked awful.

The photos are kind of blurry even with the macro setting and every light in my house on... but you can make it out somewhat.

So I'm going to get some low grit paper and sand it back, as best as possible, to the bare wood. Then I'm going to have some magic worked on it and I'll spray cherry nitro this time... I've developed a bad taste for the alcohol based dye.

I'm still psyched about the awesome stuff Mike and I talked about on the phone. Rest assured this will be a one of a kind BFG when we're done with it!

See the above.

I was just waiting on photobucket to scale down my 12MP pics.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Okay... so I sanded off that awful spotty dye job... I used 60 grit sandpaper... I got as much off as I could and I'm afraid anymore and there won't be a maple cap left

Here's the results of the sanding. If anyone can give me some advice on how to make sure it stays uniform when I colour it again (dye or nitro) or if you think I just need to go with a solid colour, let me know.

Last, I'm lookin' at you. Did that look like your "trace" coat of dye?

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Hey that looks pretty good!

I'd say one of the most important things that you could do now is to NOT lose your enthusiasm!

How does the Maple look wet or just wiped off with some Mineral Spirits?

It that looks good to you I'd go ahead & start spraying your Nitro.

If you're still unhappy with how it looks you could try dying it again but with a much, MUCH lighter coat. I'd use up to one fourth of your original recipe for the dye.

Let that dry then hit it with some 100 grit, 150, 220. Stop there & either go with your Nitro coat or post up some pics of what is not as you like then.

I'm more than happy to help anyway that I can.

After all that is what this forum is all about!

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

There is one thing that I've got to mention.

These BFG's were not meant to have the Flame Tops nor bookmatched @ that!

Your top cap of Maple is not the best piece (though it does have the flame) of maple that Gibson would use on a more pricey guitar.

Something to chew on as I think you may be feeling like you should be getting much better results when even Gibson or another re-finsher can only do so much with what they start with.

Hang in there man. Please don't give up!

Okay, I'm going broke buying naphtha. What can I use to get the massive amounts of dust off of this guitar? Wiping it with a tack cloth just seems to spread it around.

or start with that red, sand it back..... go black, sand it back and then red again... the black will make the flames pronouced....

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

man, I have missed some great threads like this since I haven't been around!

DJ, awesome! I am looking forward to the end results. Yeah, keep dying it and sanding it off, it will make the flames more pronounced like Dave said!

Lucky about that nice top hidden there!! Real Nice!

Will
