Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

When I get through with her it'll take an army to seperate us.

The only thing I'm having reservations about is the binding and the inlays. And that's just based on a cost thing. If I had the cash it wouldn't be a big deal...

My old dremel stopped working, so I'd need a new dremel plus all the bits and whatnot I would need.

You're going to be playing this thing for a long time, man. Might as well go the extra mile for the DJWilbanks sig model.

That's what I thought... and I think my wife agrees with me. It's just coming up with that extra cash.

Know anyone that wants a bigsby kit for a telecaster? That'd get me closer to getting all my parts and tools

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Alright ladies and gents. Got my stuff in from stewmac today. Provided the weather cooperates I'll be dyeing the top, back, and neck tomorrow and prepping the headstock to recieve the new overlay. I'll also be dyeing the fretboard ebony, and I may do that first since it's small enough.

Also, rottenlpcloner is supposed to be calling me this evening to see if we can work out having inlays installed, the neck bound, and the routing channel for binding added to the body. I've decided I want this BFG to be the spiritual successor to my first Gibson.

Inspiration?

Just less chrome and more black.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Update for some progress!

I got my stuff in from stewmac this afternoon. Since I am an impatient jerk, I decided to tear into it and get the fretboard dyed using their fretboard dye (which seems to actually be a leather dye ).

Simple stuff to use, I cut up an old t-shirt, taped off my neck and body and just went to wiping. Let it sit on the wood for a few minutes and then use a clean piece of cloth to wipe the dye off of the fretwires. So here's the after shots:

And for craps and giggles, I tried a stinger out using the dye. Same thing, old t-shirts and lots of tape.

It was in the middle of drying when I took these shots, that's why it looks streaky... I hope.

On tap for... uh... soon (?) dyeing the top and back and hopefully some binding and inlays.

She's coming along nicely if I do say so myself. I told my wife she may need a name...

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Honestly I have thought about one custom inlay... but I notice how much it annoys me on like the ESPs that the one inlay is different, I doubt it would be any different on the BFG.

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Thanks, Dice!

I just noticed my stinger doesn't go quite as far down as others do. That's okay with me because I'll not be using anything but tung oil for the neck and I don't want any dye to get in the way and get worn away prematurely.

With the neck are you going use grain filler? Before the Tung Oil?

I dunno, its not on there now and I love the way the neck feels and I don't want to screw that up.

That being said, I'm going to dye the back the same colour as the top (although it will be darker because of the mahogany) and I'd like the neck to match... so I just haven't decided yet.

I doubt I will...unless I can pick up another one real cheap...and refin the one that feels less amazing....

Re: BFG Refinish -- Flame top?!

Yeah... mine is beginning to stray far from BFG territory...

It was the pickup configuration that drew me to it in the first place, so I still have that. Plus it's just different... with my makeover finished it will be unique. Which is something I look for in everything I do.
