Aging Metal Parts w/Vinegar?

Anyone tried this? Good/bad results?

The wholes idea of the muriatic acid (etc) kind of turn me off. The fumes, disposal, burns...

I can't help but wonder if vinegar would give the same results...but take longer...of course.

...works very well and IMO it gives the best results for the "light" to "moderate" aged look...

Re: Aging Metal Parts w/Vinegar?

I had good luck with it by suspending the parts a couple of inches above the vinegar in a large plastic cup with a lid. The parts would turn completely black and I washed them off each day to reveal how much they had actually tarnished. Took about three days to get them like I wanted them.

I assume this works only with nickel, and not chrome?

Re: Aging Metal Parts w/Vinegar?

'Works GREAT with nickel...and for a really authentic touch to your nickel covers,
soak a length of cotton string in vinegar until saturated, then, lay it across the pole lines and move it slightly side-to side...it will leave vinegar on the surface where the string touches.

leave it for a minute or two, then rinse (thoroughly) with water.

Voila'...aged 'magnetic lines' on your covers!

Be sure to do any aging of the covers first ...depending upon how long you leave the vinegar on the surface, you can increase, or decrease the effect.

Why don't you age the guitar like all of the greats of yesteryear. They just played them.

Because sometimes you have to replace parts on a guitar that is already "naturally" reliced. In my case, shiny new pickups covers just wouldn't look right.
