Aniline Darkburst (Re)-Finish
Been absent from the forum for a while, Ive been training for a race next year, and have another baby on the way. Trying to squeak some guitar work into the mix. Here is one I sprayed today. I've been experimenting with aniline dyes and trying to get a vintage darkburst that will fade. I added some blue to the mix instead of black and this is what I came up with. Now its time to start fading it. Hopefully the blue will give some greening after the fade.

Re: Aniline Darkburst (Re)-Finish
Looks like a nice shoot !! How will you fade it ? Natural sun or tanning bed ?

Re: Aniline Darkburst (Re)-Finish
Sunlight. I have access to a tanning bed, but no 220 power in the basement. I think this guitar is going to sound really killer, and is really lightweight. Unfortunately I don't get to keep this one.

Re: Aniline Darkburst (Re)-Finish
Nick,
How are you? We missed you around here! That guitar looks awesome...nice job! And another baby on the way? That's great...congratulations! When is it due? I'm going to try and make it down in the spring, so hope to see you then. BTW, I'm about to start work on that fingerboard you gave me (or, at least half of it). Thanks again! Frank |

Re: Aniline Darkburst (Re)-Finish
Got another refin that I am doing this week (well actually two others). Just finished stripping this one. These are all guitars I built, but didn't do a great job finishing, and now that I've gotten better at finishing, I wanted to go back and do them right. Anyone thinking about stripping a black finish and painting a sunburst, think twice, that black is hard to get out of the maple.

Re: Aniline Darkburst (Re)-Finish
No chance to work on the chambered guitar today since the weather was so nice, I got some coats sprayed on guitars. Here is the above guitar with two base coats on. I got a tip from a builder to put clear coats down on the top before spraying the color coats to bring out the flame. I also sanded this one all the way to 2000 grit before any coats went on. Not an especially pronounced flame on this guitar, but this process seems to really be bringing out what flame there is:

Re: Aniline Darkburst (Re)-Finish
Hard to photograph this one, but the flame in person does the perfect peek-abo flame. I like this much better than the black. I made a boo boo with this one though. When I was scraping the biding one of the scrapings flipped and melted into the finish. Of course me trying to fix it made it worse
oh well Its got a little secret. I wanted to fade this one too, but Im going to leave it just as it is:![]() ![]()
